1989 Suzuki RGV250

Highlights

• An officially imported UK VJ21 example
• In very original, useable condition
• In the very popular blue, white and red Pepsi livery

The Background

Widely regarded as the king of the late ‘80’s early ‘90’s race replicas, the Suzuki RGV250 has built up a huge following of motorcycle aficionados from around the world.

Originally conceived by Suzuki to showcase the world beating Grand Prix technologies of their RGV Gamma V2 GP bikes of the time. The RGV250 gave lucky owners the chance to sample the unique thrill of a high-powered, two-stroke competition bike on UK roads and tracks. Once sampled, never forgotten.

The History

This particular example was officially imported by Suzuki to the UK in 1989. Being a VJ21 model this example is the lightest of the official UK bikes with a dry weight of under 130KG. In 1995 this bike was exported to Southern Ireland to be enjoyed on the roads of the Emerald Isle. The current owner re-imported the bike to England in March 2021 and re-reregistered and MOT’d it May of that year.
The current owner has done some light recommissioning including painting the swing arm and hugger as well as fitting a matching pair of Metzeler fast road tyres. A set of Pepsi liveried fairings have also been added to make this the most eye catching of race replicas and a real head-turner.

The Paperwork

The current owner has a degree of paperwork relating to the bike. This includes the current UK registration document (V5), the previous Irish registration papers, export and import paperwork, the current MOT and even the previous Irish number plate.

The Condition

As can be seen from the photographs the condition appears excellent for a 32-year-old motorcycle. The paint is bright and lustrous and any paint commissioning, such as the swing arm and the hugger, have been done to a high standard.
All light lenses and mirrors appear clear and bright with no signs of grounding or grazing. Likewise with the underside of the motorcycle and extremities such as pegs and grips.
The seat vinyl appears to be in first class condition and there seems to be no rider related wear or marks to the tank or side mouldings. The matching Metzeler tyres are recent with good tread depth and the gauges and screen are free from obvious scratching, crazing or discolouration.
All in all this RGV250 appears to be in near “time-warp” condition and ready to be a credit to its next lucky owner.

The Mechanics

The owner reports that the bike starts easily on the first kick and idles evenly. He states that the engine revs smoothly and, as is the joy with a high-powered two-stroke, the power output becomes “lively” as the power band is reached.
The VJ21 originally had a power output of around 59hp from its iconic 90-degree V twin and with only 130KG’s of dry weight to push made this a giant slayer of its day. The current owner suggests this still to be evident from what seems a very well loved and sorted motorcycle.

The Appeal

For those of us who started their motorcycling adventures in the ‘80’s and ‘90’s there remains a special allure around the high-powered twin-stroke performance bikes of the day. The small capacities and race inspired running gear made for agile and exhilarating progress.
The high-revving nature of the V-twin within the RGV 250, the narrow but dramatic powerband, the spine-chilling sound and the unmistakable smell of the two-stroke oil doing its vital work all combine to deliver a truly unique motorcycling experience.
This experience offered up by the RGV250 remains of huge appeal to seasoned riders but has more recently found a new, appreciative fan base in younger riders keen to sample arguably the best race replica two-stroke motorcycle of its era. As a result, well-loved and presented RGV250’s like this one are becoming increasing prized as an appreciating collectors item. Above all, however, these are bikes to be ridden and relished in all their screaming two-stroke glory.
