The Appeal
The W140 fundamentally changed Mercedes. Driven by the firm’s engineering-led philosophy, its $ 1 billion ($2.5 billion now) in development costs caused a financial crisis at the firm, leading to the loss of Chief Engineer Wolfgang Peter and the introduction of a new marketing-led direction that remains to this day.
All of which makes the W140 S-Class the last of its type of Mercedes and arguably the best of its era. These are impeccably-engineered and well-built cars, which perhaps explains why this 32-year-old example looks so fresh. That, and the remarkably low mileage of just 15,200 miles from new, amassed by its single keeper.
Finished in Blue Black metallic with beige leather and walnut-trimmed interior, this car has the 5L M118 V8 engine and is the very rare long-wheelbase variant. We are told the car was collected by its first and only keeper from the factory and then lived in New Zealand. In 2023, the owner chose to retire in the UK and moved the car with him. It carried full UK registration and a MOT valid to April 2027 with no advisories. It has been recently serviced, plus new plugs, distributor cap and rotor arm.
The joy of a W140 is not just in that uncompromising engineering, but in its sheer usability, three decades after it left the factory. This example is about as close to a new one as collectors are likely to get.
The vendor says:
“If you’re after a time warp example of Mercedes 90s flagship, I genuinely think this could quite possibly be the best example on the market currently.”
