The Appeal

 
The W124 (the cabriolet version is officially the A124) was the successor to the very successful W123 model so had big shoes to fill. To ensure this happened Mercedes Benz lavished the W124 with many technical innovations of the time. These included a very aerodynamic shape, partially fared underside to reduce noise and aid airflow, the iconic single, eccentric sweep wiper and an exhaust oxygen sensor for the first time. It’s status as a distance swallowing cabriolet for four adults and their luggage remains hard to beat.
 
This example benefits from having been in enthusiastic and informed ownership since 2020. As a result, it has been diligently maintained and a number of common areas of issue have been identified and addressed. For a car to travel in with friends in all conditions, this A124 makes a compelling ownership proposition.
 

The History and Paperwork

• First registered in February 1996
• Between then and 2020 the Mercedes was enjoyed by three former keepers
• At this point the E220 had covered around 117,500 miles
• The current owner acquired the car in 2020 to become the fourth keeper
• Only around a further 4,000 miles or so have been added since then
• This equates to a sensible 4,200 or so miles a year on average
• On acquisition the current owner spent over £2,000 on maintenance 
• Thoughtful improvements in current ownership include a new hood in 2023
• Other work includes replacement fan motor and lower wishbones and bushes
• A great archive of paperwork is included
• The current V5 in the name of the present keeper is on hand
• The car holds a valid MOT until July 2025 
• Numerous earlier hard copy MOTs are also included 
• This the all-important service book is on hand
• The service book contains 15 stamps from both Mercedes dealers and independents
• Numerous invoices are on hand detailing work undertaken 

The Condition

• The E220 presents in a great Green Black metallic (Smaragdsschwarz -189) colourway
• The paintwork presents very well with no notable imperfections spotted or reported
• The bodywork is very good too belying the age of the car
• A good level of lustrous shine is evident throughout
• A new hood was fitted in 2023 meaning this appears pristine
• Sits on its original set of wider Sportline 15-inch Mercedes Benz alloy wheels 
• These, also appear very well presented
• Sportline badges are in evidence behind the front wheel arches
• The spacious interior is sumptuously appointed 
• Heated front seats & electric drivers seat adjustment
• Period Becker stereo/satnav present
• Upholstery is courtesy of a mushroom hued leather
• This contrasts perfectly with the dark exterior livery
• The condition appears excellent overall with the front seats recently refurbished
• During current ownership the seatbelt butlers have been repaired
• The rear seat belt buckles have also been replaced
• The new hood’s headlining matches the original and is in perfect condition
• Everything in here is reported to be working as it should
• The interior looks to be in very good original condition and presents very well throughout
• Minor fault with the spare key and vanity mirrors

 

The Mechanics

• This E220 is fitted with the well proven M111 in-line four petrol engine
• This 16-valve unit was originally rated at 148bhp and 155Ib-ft torque
• Power is transferred to the rear wheels via a 4G-Tronic automatic transmission
• This configuration provides a good balance between performance and economy
• Being a Sportline model this car has a lower ride height and stiffened suspension
• The steering ratio is also more direct to give the car a sharper driving dynamic
• The current owner reports that “the car drives beautifully with no rattles or shakes “ 
• He also confirms that “the gearbox changes very smoothly”
• The Sportline chassis strikes a good balance between comfort and engagement
• The under-bonnet presentation of the car is highly original
• All expected data plates are present and correct
• The underside of the car looks clean and undamaged
• The owner reports that the car was retreated with Mercedes underbody sealant in 2023
