THE APPEAL
Introduced in 2001, the Jaguar ‘X400’ was the company’s most important new car in a generation. Built to compete in the burgeoning compact executive market, the new ‘X-Type’ would go head-to-head with the likes of the BMW 3-Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class, but with an added dose of ‘Jaguarness’ throw into the mix. It was a terrific car to drive, with a choice of 2.5 and 3.0-litre petrol engines at launch and permanent four-wheel-drive giving it incredible handling and performance.
This example – a launch flagship 3.0 SE - is from early on in the car’s life and was registered in September 2001, 10 weeks after the X-Type made its debut and one of the first cars on the new ‘51’ style number plates.
The first owner kept the car for 23 years and maintained it with no expense spared. Other than its most recent service in November 2023 at 54,700 miles, the X-Type was serviced by the Jaguar main dealership in Oxford for most of its life (up to 52,300 miles) and there is a total of 12 stamps in the service book backing up the low mileage and level of attention it has seen.
It has to be one of the smartest, most genuine and lowest mileage early cars left, with an excellent body, near spotless interior and a high specification including rare factory satellite navigation.
Early X-Types are at the point now where the best examples are starting to attract attention – and this one is most certainly among those – as well as one of the rarest. One to preserve and cherish, as soon there’ll be barely any X-Types left.

- Very smart overall condition – all panels are straight, gleaming shiny and ripple-free with no dents or notable marks
- All badges and exterior trim in good condition

- Sills are strong – previously repaired to a good standard
- Underside appears sound, with light surface rust on rear suspension arms
- Minor marks and scuffs commensurate with age and mileage but nothing of any major note, the worst being some light ‘swirl’ scratches on the boot lid
- One small rust bubble on edge of bonnet
- Minor scuffs on rear bumper corner
