The ‘997’ generation of the 911 is arguably the most popular of the water-cooled variants of the car. Introduced in 2004, it was more classically styled than the previous 996, but used much of its architecture and running gear.
This one is the most desirable of the lot – a range-topping Carrera 4S with four-wheel-drive and a convertible body. It’s a fabulously desirable thing, finished in the best colour, with a comprehensive history file and genuine low mileage. It’s a bit of a gem.

The cabin of the 911 is exceptionally smart, with no notable wear. The dark blue leather seats are in fine order and carpets, door trims and dashboard are in excellent overall condition with no notable marks of damage.
The Porsche command centre stereo/infotainment/trip computer system works as it should and displays an enticing Porsche logo on start-up, while all of the dials and controls work as they should.
For a 17-year-old car wearing its original paintwork, the 997 is in wonderful condition with only a few very tiny marks to the paintwork and nothing of any concern whatsoever. The 20-spoke alloys are in similarly excellent condition, as is the canvas roof.
The 911 is equipped with Porsche’s 355bhp 3.8-litre flat-six, which is the biggest and most powerful of the standard engines, matched to a six-speed manual transmission with four-wheel-drive, delivering tenacious grip and exhilarating performance.
It has been carefully maintained by knowledgeable specialists or main dealers and was serviced (major) less than 350 miles ago. The vendor has also had the 911 checked over by a specialist, including the internal condition of the engine with an endoscope, when it was last serviced and all required repairs have been carried out as necessary. This is particularly important for a 997 as some examples have suffered from cylinder scoring. The bores on this example have been checked by a specialist and are in good order, with no cylinder wear to the engine’s internals. At the same time the IMS and RMS oil seals have been replaced to address the note on the last MOT certificate as the examiner noticed a slight leak in this area.
It starts and runs beautifully and the owner reports that it is fantastic to drive, with no known issues or faults.
The Tandem pump, front coolant cross over pipes and tyres have recently been replaced.
This is as good as an early 997 gets – a great colour, in superb condition, with a comprehensive history and reported to be in great mechanical health. It’s a great modern classic to enjoy and, as long as you keep up with its maintenance, will be an inexpensive one to own as 997s – especially the 4S - are rapidly increasing in popularity.
