The Appeal
With its aluminium spaceframe construction, the R231 was true to the ‘Sport Leicht’ or ‘sport light’ idea that gave the lengthy lineage its name. Like its predecessors, this was a well-built, highly appointed GT designed to take the effort out of any journey, long or short.
The 3L twin turbo 333bhp SL400 is arguably the pick of the range because it blends decent performance heft with real-world economy. Few are likely as well kept and sparingly used as this one. Finished in popular Iridium Silver with high factory specification, it has been in the hands of the current keeper from new and has covered less than 8,700 miles in that time.
You might expect a car that has been so little used to have skimped on maintenance. Not so. The service records show regular work by main dealers and, more recently, marque specialists.
