The Appeal

This MGB is finished in the attractive shade of Teal Blue and remarkably it retains its original interior, albeit in rather threadbare condition. So here we have a running and driving example of a BGT, which is ready for its next owner to make their mark on the next stage of its life. 
The next custodian will get to decide just how extensively to restore the car. You could embark upon a full, ground-up restoration. Alternatively a more light-touch approach could be chosen, doing what’s necessary to keep the car on the road while retaining its charmingly tatty aesthetic. 
Everyone needs to own an MGB at some stage, so this chrome bumper GT is a very accessible entry point. 

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered in March 1972
  • Road Tax and MOT exempt 
  • Only two former keepers in over fifty years (three with the current owner)
  • Purchased by the current owner in 2011
  • Accompanied by an extensive history file
  • Garage-stored and used for touring Britain and Ireland
  • Previous restoration work undertaken
  • The VIN plate is missing, the owner suggests that this may have been lost during repair work
  • UK V5C
  • Comes with many workshop maintenance and repair manuals 
  • The odometer is not working and has been replaced previously, so the car’s actual mileage is unknown

The Interior

  • This MG’s interior is believed to be original
  • The original upholstery is well worn but clinging on
  • It has evidence of wear and use throughout
  • The carpets are reasonable
  • We’re told by the vendor that the seatbelts all work correctly
  • On the dashboard, some of the paint is coming off around the instruments
  • The speedometer is not working
  • Ash tray lid missing
  • The interior lights do not currently work
  • The original steering wheel has some pitting to its spokes
  • A radio is fitted but not working, but a new old stock replacement (still in its box) is supplied with the car
  • The speakers will require replacement
  • Spacious boot to the rear
  • Full size spare wheel under the boot floor

The Exterior 

  • Finished in the fetching shade of Teal Blue
  • Desirable chrome bumper model
  • The body has excellent lines and nice panel gaps
  • There is a little pitting to the chrome 
  • All the trim pieces are present, while the badges could benefit from re-colouring
  • Some of the chrome trim pieces are dented and scratched
  • The glass is in good condition, along with the wipers and screenwash system
  • The rubber door seals would benefit from replacement
  • Paintwork starting to bubble in places
  • There is a patch of paint missing above the rear left wheel arch
  • General fading, scratches and chips throughout 
  • There are signs of corrosion to the underside, such as along the sill seams
  • Corrosion present on the underside of both front wings, which will require welding
  • The rear wheel arches will also require some attention
  • Some welding to the floorpan will be necessary, especially at the front end of the driver’s footwell 
  • The Rostyle wheels look good and their tyres are said to be in good condition
  • There is a substantial dent in the front bumper, which the vendor tells us was caused by a clutch failure leading to an intimate moment with an item of street furniture

The Mechanics 

  • 1,798cc B-Series engine
  • The engine is said to be strong but requires some tappet adjustment
  • It has been run on unleaded fuel with additives
  • Still features two 6V batteries under the rear seat
  • Said to start from cold without too much persuasion
  • The twin S.U. carburettors could benefit from some adjustment, but the needles have repeatedly been replaced
  • Said to maintain good oil pressure and engine temperature, with the cooling system and radiator in good condition 
  • Inline fuel filter fitted, with the tank and pump in good condition
  • The exhaust system has been replaced with a stainless steel setup
  • The water pump, clutch slave cylinder and alternator have all reportedly been replaced
  • The suspension bushes and rear leaf springs are due replacement and the handbrake cable is a little sticky
  • Would benefit from a full service and tune-up
 

Summary

A good example of a rolling project, which can currently be driven but has plenty of potential for improvement.
