The Appeal
BMW sent shockwaves through the entire car industry in 1999 when it launched its first SUV. The X5 was one of the first premium off-roaders, a car that would set a substantial precedent for the entire market.
Most manufacturers followed suit, but the X5 was one of the first truly luxurious SUVs this side of a Range Rover.
Today, those early X5s are on the cusp of becoming quite collectable, their contribution to the car industry widely recognised. But good, low mileage ones are few and far between, which makes this one an especially enticing proposition. It’s a genuine low-miler – a 3.0i with the popular ‘M54’ straight-six under the bonnet, and presented in very good, unmolested condition.

This is a supremely well-equipped car, with smart charcoal grey leather and electrically adjustable memory seats.
It has an impressive spec including factory sat nav, a premium audio system, air conditioning, cruise control, auto lights and wipers, trip computer, an auto dimming rear view mirror and a brilliant panoramic sunroof set up.
In the boot, it has its original first aid kit, tools, jack and spare wheel.
The condition is superb, with barely any wear to the seats and carpets, smart door cards and a good headlining, while the sunroof works as intended.
The Exterior

The X5 looks extremely smart in its Sterling Grey Pearl Metallic paint, all of which is original and free from any major damage or flaws.
There are a couple of minor faults, mainly a missing bonnet badge and some light scuffs on its alloy wheels, though these aren’t major issues at all and would be easy enough for the next owner to rectify.

The X5 comes with the biggest 3.0-litre version of BMW’s proven M54 straight-six engine, which appears to be in fine fettle and is backed up by a comprehensive history folder and lots of invoices for maintenance throughout its life.
It runs sweetly and performs well, while the automatic transmission is also in good order. The vendor reports that the car drives very well indeed, with decent performance, good handling and strong brakes.
Summary
Good first-generation X5s are getting fewer and further between, which makes this example a bit of a find. It’s in great overall condition and is a smart low-mileage example with an exceptional interior, good bodywork and appears to be in great mechanical order. It’s also the most efficient petrol example of the model and one of the least expensive to run.
