The Appeal
Maserati has long appealed to enthusiasts seeking something a little more left-field, offering a distinctive alternative to its more obvious Italian rivals. Traditionally favoured by those who value discretion and elegance as much as outright performance, the marque has always occupied a particularly charismatic corner of the grand touring world.
The Ghibli belongs to a late-1990s period when Maserati remained proudly idiosyncratic. Launched as a low-volume grand touring coupé, it combined sporting intent courtesy of its twin-turbocharged V6 engine with a richly appointed cabin trimmed in Connolly leather and wood veneer.
Styled by Marcello Gandini, just over 2,000 examples of this generation of Ghibli were produced during its six-year lifespan. Of those, only a little over 1,000 were fitted with the larger 2.8-litre engine, with a smaller 2.0-litre version offered for the Italian domestic market in response to local taxation rules.
Benefitting from significant recent expenditure, including a respray and cambelt change, this left-hand-drive example would make an appealing addition to any collection of modern classic Italian machinery. Equally, it remains ideally suited to the sort of long-distance continental touring for which it was created, combining pace, rarity and unmistakable Maserati style.
