It was the first M3 powered by a six-cylinder engine displacing 2990 cc producing 282 horsepower. It was the first M3 to be built in right-hand drive and the first BMW generation to offer VANOS- a variable valve timing system that perpetually adjusts the engines camshafts so maximum torque is available under partial and full load. The E36 M3 is also one of the best-handling cars money can buy.
At the time, it compared favourably against the NSX, F355, the Carrera S, and the Supra Turbo and its less ostentatious styling cleverly hid race-proven tech like aerodynamic side mirrors, front and rear aprons, motor-sport 17-inch lightweight alloys, arguably the finest sport seat ever manufactured and a 3-centimetre lower ride height than its less powerful siblings.
