1995 Renault Clio Williams 2
While everyone continues to lose their mind at the increasingly rare offering of a homologation car on the road, and rightfully so, there are few with the pedigree of the Renault Clio Williams. Never mind that new Japanese hatchback that we’re all lusting after, this is a true hot hatch hero.
As EVO Magazine put it when revisiting the Williams Clio in 2017, in a test that saw the car awarded five stars, “The Clio Williams qualifies effortlessly for ‘icon’ status because it set a new performance benchmark in the hot-hatch arena, because it successfully completed the succession from the hitherto imperious 205, and because its visual presence carries an indefinable gravitas that requires no explanation. It’s also brilliantly entertaining to drive.”
Even if you take away the fact that this was a machine built to satisfy homologation rules for Renault Sport’s rallying effort, the stats alone are enough to make any true petrolhead tingle. 150bhp, under a tonne, wheels pushed out to each corner and a NACA duct on the bonnet - what’s not to like?
As a Williams 2, this 1995 example benefits from and the same Sports Blue paintwork as the Williams 1 models ABS. Having covered only 74, 154 miles from new, we admire the restraint of previous owners for not clocking up many more as is common for these cars.
We also admire the manner in which the car has been kept, presenting superbly today and with a history file showing many invoices for maintenance and parts invoices from Renault alongside a stamped service book. This file also shows the cambelt was changed in 2017 at 73, 996 miles (less than 200 miles ago) alongside the installing of Catcams cams, pulleys and Wossner 12. 5:1 pistons in 2007.
