Although not officially announced until the March, 1969, Geneva Salon, the Maserati Indy had appeared in prototype guise on Carrozzeria Vignale's stand at the previous season's Turin Salon. Named in honour of the marque's two great Indianapolis 500 victories (1939 and 1940), the newcomer was artfully styled, its crisp lines belying a four-seater interior. Notable as the first Maserati to employ unit construction, the fastback coupé was equipped with independent coil-and-wishbone front suspension, a well-located 'live' rear axle, front and rear anti-roll bars, four-wheel ventilated disc brakes and recirculating-ball steering. Initially powered by a 4, 136cc 'quad-cam' light alloy V8 allied to either five-speed manual or three-speed automatic transmission, the Indy boasted a 155mph top speed. Superseded by later 4. 7 and 4. 9 variants, just 440 4. 2 litre examples were made.

La proprietà è nota dall'agosto 1977, quando fu acquistata da Edward R. Robinson, 43 anni, da Cris Graham di Stuart Graham Motors a Broomhall, Cheshire. All'epoca era rossa con paraurti neri, ma era ancora registrata ‘PRG 19’. Robinson fece una piccola saldatura e predispose tubi in acciaio inossidabile, e godette dell’auto finché un trasloco non costrinse la vendita alla famiglia attuale nel 1986. Non senza rimpianto la cedette, ricordando, “Ho avuto diverse auto in passato, ma l’Indy era una delle migliori da guidare e il suo aspetto è imbattibile.”
La Maserati è entrata in possesso del venditore nel 2003. Un restauro della carrozzeria è stato eseguito dal 2004 al 2005, seguito da una riverniciatura in un colore Maserati 4200 dal 2009 al 2010. Gli interni in pelle rossa sono stati mantenuti incredibilmente originali. Meccanicamente si presenta in ottima forma, grazie a un ampio programma di lavori vari eseguiti nel 2020 e 2021 da McGrath Maserati. Retaining its matching chassis, engine and gearbox numbers, it is offered with history including the original owner’s and maintenance manuals, copies of the Maserati order sheets, a Maserati authenticity certificate, a letter from Robinson and several M. O. T. s and invoices.
