The Appeal
While the Audi Quattro has become inextricably associated with a well-known detective chief inspector in recent years, its reputation was forged decades earlier in the fire and fury of world rallying. It won back-to-back World Rally Championships in 1983 and 1984, the latter in the hands of Swedish legend Stig Blomqvist. The road-going Quattro flattered the amateur and delighted the enthusiast, and it’s a testament to Audi’s right-first-time design that no significant changes were made during the Quattro’s 11-year lifespan.
While some cars would be tired after racking up a six-figure mileage, Audi Quattros tend to be nicely run-in by that point. This particular example has been very lightly used during the current owner’s 11-year tenure, with the last four MOT mileage histories all recording 126,000 miles. Nonetheless, ongoing maintenance has seen fluids regularly replaced and the brake calipers and pads renewed, with ongoing testing on the battery and alternator.
This car was ahead of its time in terms of features like its digital dashboard and trip computer. An Alpine CD/MP3 player is the only obvious 21st-century intrusion into an otherwise fully period dashboard. The MIlltek stainless steel exhaust is an external modification, while the original space-saver tyre has been joined by a full spare wheel with a new tyre fitted.
Described as “a truly lovely example” by its long-standing owner, this car has previously appeared in an episode of ‘Wheeler Dealers’ dedicated to the Quattro. Another remarkable feature which is bound to appeal to fans of Audi’s rally heritage is Stig Blomqvist’s signature across the driver’s sun visor. In tandem with that gloriously presented body, such unique details set this car apart from its many surviving Quattro siblings.
The History and Paperwork
- Official factory repair manual still in situ
- Serviced regularly with receipts and invoices
- Appeared in a Series 6 episode of Wheeler Dealers
- Stig Blomqvist’s signature on driver’s sun visor
- Two keys supplied with the car
The Condition
- Resprayed a decade ago and covered just 3,000 miles since
- Original ‘quattro’ window stickers and four-ring body decals
- 16-spoke white alloy wheels in great condition
- Kept in the garage when not being driven
- Chassis number plaque under bonnet
Described by its owner as being in “excellent condition with no marks or scratches”, this fully resprayed Quattro retains a wealth of period detailing. There’s something deeply Eighties about the diagonal ‘quattro’ stripes across the figure-hugging front seats, or the lime green digital instrumentation which preceded today’s digital facias by decades. Internally, only the chunky three-spoke Audi Sport steering wheel shows the sort of wear you’d expect from a car of this age and mileage. The door cards and carpets/mats are in particularly good order, and the rear seats and boot appear to have been barely used.
The Mechanics
- Iconic 2.1-liter five-cylinder engine
- Turbocharged and intercooled
- Five-speed manual transmission
- Engine bay in extremely good order
- No modifications beyond original specification
- All instruments and switchgear reportedly working
The current owner, who has had this car for 11 years but covered barely three thousand miles in that time, describes it as being in excellent mechanical order, always starting first time. They also report the car as being in “factory standard” condition with “no known faults”.
