The Appeal
The XJS may well be one of the most iconic British cars of the past century. With its rather brutalist lines, unusual rear buttresses and opulent cabins, it may have been very different to the preceding E-Type, but was quite the compelling Grand Tourer. Quickly, they became a symbol of aspirational life on the road - a luxuriant, laid back sort of car that could sap up the miles in sheer comfort.
This Dorchester Grey example with Barley leather interior was delivered new through F. Tastets in Agen, and has passed through just three hands since 1989. The second keeper retained the car for an impressive 24 years, from 2000 to 2024, suggesting a genuine attachment to the vehicle. In 2025, a comprehensive programme of mechanical work was undertaken covering the gearbox, brakes, engine, suspension, and fuel system. The vendor states the engine runs well and the car is very pleasant to drive. The burr walnut trim around the gear lever is damaged, but otherwise this XJS presents as a well-sorted, well-documented example with matching serial numbers and a valid inspection certificate through to mid-2027.image.png4.13 MB
