Description

This Fully restored Mercedes SL 320 is not one to miss! A great opportunity for any enthusiast to make their own. Sitting at 97k, 7 months MOT and thousands spent on it this year, this is one not to pass by…

Incredibly clean body work, straight with no signs of any previous welding or body repairs and no rust at all! Even the underside was in amazing condition.

I bought the car then and there, had a local garage put it through an mot and drove it 75 miles back home two days later, it didn’t miss a beat.

Once home I spent £600 on a professional stage one detail and spent some summer weekends driving it around and enjoying it.
After driving it for just under 300 miles that summer I tucked it away in the garage and started to buy parts and save for a full restoration.

Everything was fully prepped and painted, and I mean everything.
Right down to the littlest details like the metal rings that surround the headlights.

It only felt right to give the mechanical side the same attention as the body work. So while everything was off I had components cleaned, sanded and painted. The restoration included:

Full bare metal respray and underseal
New polybushes front to back.
New brake lines, brake pads + discs + backing plates.
New brake shoes, drums, cylinders and fitting kit.
New handbrake cables.
New front wheel hubs/ bearings.
New front control arms.
New front strut mounts, new springs, new shocks.
New shock dust covers.
New driveshaft coupler.
New track rod ends.
New Hand break
New battery
New lights
Leather fully colonized

The original idea was to have everything but the engine bay done as I had planned to have a bigger engine in over the winter months. I was told they would be able to do the main area of the bay with this engine left in by just removing a few bits like the washer bottle and air intake. So I agreed and had the bay done too. Please note the engine bay was more of a refresh rather than a full restoration. It has been treated the same as the rest of the car but without taking out the engine it cannot be done 100%.

While everything was being put back together it was only right to also refresh the interior. All the carpets were deep cleaned to give a more updated feel to the car. Luckily, as well as the car being in such amazing condition so were the seats, showing a tiny bit of wear on the drivers pillar but mint condition other than that.
Under the carpet some extra sound deadening was laid, not a lot, I still wanted that old car vibe but just a little bit more than factory standard. The speakers were also replaced with new ones. Everything was then bolted back together, cleaned, new wheels and tires fitted.

It then was taken for its mot and tracking. It passed with flying colours and I have been enjoying it ever since. It has continued to live in the dry garage when not in use and thanks to the great weather this past summer it hasn’t even been driven in the wet since all the work has been done.

As you can tell from the write up this car is in superb condition and really is a stunning example of a Mercedes SL.

The engine itself runs lovely, starts first time every-time, it is smooth and it really is a pleasure to drive.

If I was to keep it I would now restore this engine and keep it original. Likewise the gearbox feels just as it should.
