Description
Camper van / Day van conversion on a classic French Fire service Firetruck. Peugeot J9. Two litre petrol engine.
Although this camper does not officially need an MOT test I put it through one. It passed. The tester remaked on how solid it was.
This is the wife and my third camper conversation. We used that experience to build what has been a reliable and comfortable campervan. We finished the conversion last year.
We have just completed a three week tour from Cornwall to Kent covering well over a thousand miles in total. This Firetruck was our transport and accommodation with no problems.
It can seat five all with seat belts so it is also a good day van.
People like this van. You get a frequent "toot toot" and a thumbs up whilst driving. Plus smiles and interested chats whilst parked. This van seems to bring pleasure to all. My friend description of the interior is "light and airy with an all round view".
The camper has:-
Toilet, small fridge, heating, sink, cooker, gas bottle in vented cupboard, water pump, solar charging and split charging for the leisure battery, 240 volt electric hook up with two sockets, double easily pulled out bed with memory foam , blanket box area, shoe box area, coat/ shirt hanging area, blinds, usb charging points, tv/ tablet bracket, three fire extinguishers and a fire blanket. Plus lots of storage drawers, four interior up lighters and a bedside lamp.
The heating we find very useful is a diesel fuel powered unit which blown warm air. Its cosy in no time.
For the running of the vehicle I fitted new:-
Brake pads, front brake caliper refurb seals kit, rear brake wheel cylinders, all flexible brake hoses, brake master cylinder.
Clutch master cylinder.
Engine oil , oil filter, spark plugs, ignition leads, distributer cap, points, rotor arm.
Top and bottom coolant hoses.
Alternator and drive belt.
Gearbox oil.
All this enables the vehicle to drive and stop perfectly.
I imported this van from France into Great Britain. I used a reputable import firm to do this. (My Car Import). They were a super company with perfect communication. The import duty was paid. The DVLA sent out their inspector. He was happy and I received number plates and a log book .
I then taxed and insured it with no problem.
I did have the original French registration document. However the DVLA keep that so I have photos of that.
The Firetruck was used in France to transport personnel to "shouts" It also carried some equipment. I googled the name of the town it was based in and found photos of it in its town garage. I still have those. I still have the original French plates. I though I might display the front one as part of the decor inside the vehicle or it could be used in its new home garage perhaps.
It also fits in a car parking space. I can give exact dimensions if needed.
Othet additions I have added are:-
Running lights, spotlights, high powered day lights at the front, temperature gauge, voltmeter, 12 volt charging points (2), usb charging points (3), air horns.
The original roof warning lights and emergency vehicle horns all work. I did however change the roof lights from their from the original blue. They are Britax units and new blue lenses can be bought if original authenticity is required.
Underneath the chassis is in very good condition with no rust problems.
There are no oil leaks.
The brake pedal is firm and the servo works as it should.
The clutch works as it should .
The road tax is zero as its a historical vehical and no further MOTS are needed.
Obviously it's left hand drive as its a French pompier.
I have tried to give a comprehensive fair and true description.
I can drive it to its new owner. Basically if you have bought it I am happy to deliver it wherever you are in Great Britain. We would have to come to some arrangement with the fuel cost and my return train/ bus
