1980 Austin Maxi 1750 'EMU'
Inca Yellow. 140, 000 miles.
Under previous ownerships (between 2020 and 2022) the car has undergone substantial mechanical renovations, including: rebuilt head, new brake pipes, clutch slave cylinder, alternator, water pump, dash frame, fuel hose, brakes and refurbished hydrogas units.
I bought EMU in June 2022 and since owning it I have had the fuel tank stripped, refurbished and repainted by a specialist company and the starter motor has been refurbished and a new battery and NOS solenoid fitted. EMU now has some retro 70s style number plates on and a few other bits and pieces have been done. Oil and filter change in August 2023.
EMU is solid underneath, but the body work could do with some tidying up and a respray. The wings are the worst part and have filler in them, but I have bought 2 replacement wings. They just need sandblasting and painting. Most other areas of rust appear to be surface rust. The exhaust has been patched before and could do with replacing, but it is not blowing and I have had the exhaust brackets replaced.
The interior is in good condition (aside from some sun damage to the top of the rear seatback, a small tear in the headlining and wear and tear to parcel shelf) and EMU drives very nicely!
EMU recently appeared in the film Empire of Light, starring Olivia Colman.
Extensive history and photos of the car through the years.
Located in Devon. £3500 or nearest offer. I am sadly selling my 1980 Maxi 1750, EMU due to a back injury making a manual car difficult to drive.
Finished in Inca Yellow (only a handful of Maxis left in this colour) and with a memorable number plate!
I have enjoyed taking EMU to shows (always draws a crowd!), drives out over the moors and trips away. Maxis are very practical, usable classic cars and EMU was our main vehicle for moving house a few months ago!
I have loved owning EMU and I am gutted to be having to sell. I really hope she can go to a good home.
