This 1965 Austin Gipsy was part of the 1997 Home Office auctions selling off 97 of the Austin Gipsys they?d bought in the 1960s as part of their preparations for keeping the county going in the event of a nuclear attack. This vehicles had been bought new, kept in blast proof bunkers and regularly serviced for 32 years.
This particular Austin Gipsy was sold as Lot 101. It had had been designated for use as an AFS (Auxiliary Fire Service) vehicle when purchased new in 1965.
When the AFS was disbanded in 1968 its Austin Gipsys were mothballed as part of Civil Defence preparations for any ballistic attacks.
The paintwork is pretty good but there is rust on the body seams and front wings, however the chassis is solid, the vehicle has had waxoyl injection
The upholstery on all seats is in good orginal condition. Although there is a small tear in the front passenger base seat, the driving position is actually surprisingly good.
There are bench seats in the back which are in excellent condition.
The upper section of the body and the roof are fibreglass and obviously free of rust. The fibreglass in neither crazed or cracked,
This vehicle comes with an itemized list of restoration and repair work undertaken, including orginal repair manuals with a large file of previous history of work undertaken.
The Austin Gipsy is a vehicle with a great mechanical and aesthetic integrity and dives perfectly as it should, it must be one of the best examples you could find on the market today

The Austin Gipsy has Flexitor unit to the front giving a soft ride and has self damping effect, combined with hydraulic dampers the Gipsy had the ability to travel more smoothly over rough terrain with leaf springs to the rear of the vehicle with a load capacity of 10 cwt.
