I spent a few years waiting for the right project bike to turn into a Top Gun replica. Something I had promised myself as a 15 year old when I first saw the film.
So this is a genuine A1 with genuine 17k miles on the clock. It was a runner when I bought it but had not been used for 10 years. The last few years have been spent slowly getting the bike into great mechanical shape. It is now running how you would want it.

Main effort has gone into the cooling system. These bikes ran hot and the internet will tell you of problems with overheating. Not this GPZ. The cooling system has been completely overhauled. The radiator went out to Northern Radiators in Leeds for a recore. All hoses replaced. Fan replaced and rebuilt. The cooling system was flushed out repeatedly and on longer summer runs the bikes temperature gauge does not reach halfway.
Front and rear brakes have been overhauled. It stops hard. New chain and sprockets. New tyres. Valve clearances done. Oil filter replaced and oil changed ( quite a few times whenever it?s gone back on the stand )
A full original exhaust system was sourced with the correct long cans. The bike will come with the short cans as well as I bought these before deciding I preferred the long exhaust. You can look online to see what these exhaust systems cost.
The carbs have come off, cleaned and returned to standard jets to go with the standard exhaust being put on. New rubbers gone on.
Once it was mechanically sound and went through its MOT it went back on the stand for the bodywork to come off. This was sent to the team who painted the MCN project bike.

Minor repairs were made to the bodywork and the Top Gun colour scheme and stickers applied. Not all stickers from the Top Gun GPZ were applied as I didn?t like all of them, but I have them in a drawer if the purchaser wants the full set.
The only thing that was not overhauled was the suspension. As a genuine low mileage bike there was no work needed.
Please note, this was not a nut and bolt ground up rebuild. I waited for the right bike that did not need that level of effort to get back on the road. It is still a 40 year old bike.
It will come with a full front end from an A8 GPZ900r to provide a bolt on 17? wheel option. Something else I was considering but decided against.
The GPZ comes with a brand new MOT from the first week of October.
What is left to do ? The seat needs recovering, but my plan was to let the bodywork get some age on it so I left the seat as is.
The carbs might benefit from a professional synch. I did it by eye/ wire. The bike runs great, but it's something I'd get done next time the carbs are off so that I know everything is optimum.
