The 190 was the Compact Mercedes, introduced to compete with the BMW 3 series with no compromise as to build quality that by the early 1990’s had become synonymous with the Mercedes brand. In the UK, the 190 was mainly sold as a 1. 8 or 2. 0 four-cylinder saloon with a limited number of six cylinder options being available; either the 2. 6 or the Cosworth 2. 3 and later 2. 5 replacement. There were only two diesels. The 2. 0 four cylinder 190D was rather slow off the mark and the 190D 2. 5 addressed that problem. Whilst not exactly fast, the 2. 5D is a lovely, smooth and free revving five cylinder engine that is indistinguishable from the petrol versions when you are on the move. The only giveaway is the diesel “chatter” on tick over. But the payoff is 35-40 mpg and the renowned longevity. It’s not unusual for a 2. 5 that has been regularly serviced to achieve over 500, 000 miles with some having recorded over One Million miles on the original engine and gearbox.
This example has covered a modest 170, 500 miles and has been impeccably maintained both mechanically and bodily. Showing no signs of rust, and with all panel gaps indicating original floor panels, wings and sills and paintwork, the car is a testament to the care of previous owners.
Since acquisition, I have had the car fully serviced with any defects rectified within the last year. Works include; New Propshaft Front coupling, New glow plug relay, New front and rear road springs, Fuel Injection pump overhaul with new “o” rings, New Steering column top bearings, New indicator cancelling ring, New Steering wheel clamping bolt, New flexible brake lines, New Engine Mounts, New lower pivot joints, New suspension top mounts, Front Anti Roll Bar bushes, Rear Brake Pads.
The interior is in excellent condition with no rips or wear apparent. Although seat covers are fitted (not included) to the front seats to keep them in good condition, the fabric on the front seats is as good as the rear. The car is to be sold without the radio as fitted (it was a birthday gift) but I will fit another before sale.
The car comes with an MOT until October 2024 and drives beautifully. It is ready for the next 450, 000 miles!
