1959 AUSTIN A35 - HRDC ACADEMY SPEC – JACKIE OLIVER RACED
Well known as The Flying Satsuma. This 1959 Austin A35 is a storied example of the HRDC race specification car, this car won the first ever all A35 Academy HRDC race at Mallory Park in 2015. The car was featured at the 2016 Goodwood Revival with British Formula One driver and 1969 Le Mans winner Jackie Oliver as the co-driver, at the Silverstone Classic with Australian touring car competitor Wayne Gardner as its co-driver, and at classic/ race car shows at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) in Birmingham. and an exciting racing history
Built to full Academy Racing Specification in 2015. The 1275cc A Series Engine was built by Classic & Modern Engine Services in Bracknell and still carries the sealing tags for the Academy Spec Engines (reportedly being rebuilt since by them also but no paperwork for this), it is paired with a four-speed manual gearbox built by Heathrow transmissions. The body was stripped by Prostrip in Nottingham, before being featured on their stand at the 2014 NEC Classic Car Show and repainted with a numbered livery by Malin Motor Bodies in Sheffield. The body and orange paintwork remain in good condition, there are some minor marks commensurate with it being a race car and being built some near 9 years ago. The drivers seat is an HRDC Academy racing seat, with only a slight mark on the shoulder support. Correct Academy Spec. Roll Cage fitted and harness.
Its last race outing was Lydden Hill in 2019.
I have owned it since May 2023, my intent on purchase was to take it Hillclimbing at Shelsey Walsh and Loton Park with occasional Sprint at Curborough but my Clio 182 Sprint Car is taking priority. If it doesn’t sell in coming months it will be going in to be readied for some Hillclimbs later this season or for 2025.
Comes with 2 sets of wheels, the Black Minilites carry Goodyear road tyres (all new in 2023 – I put them on so I could drive it on the road), and a set of White Minilites with Dunlop Racing Tyres on.
Since purchase it has had little use, it has done a 25 mile round trip to Curborough Sprint Circuit twice for a Breakfast meet and then a Track Afternoon. Drives well on the road and turns heads although it is set up for racing.
I am old fashioned, I prefer talking rather than exchanging text messages etc – if genuinely interested please call. Being old fashioned I only deal face to face so if you want to talk numbers on the price its standing in front of me looking at the car, no discussion on price will be entered into otherwise. Payment by Bank Transfer only. The Flying Satsuma is ready to race with a quick check over.
