Classic Devon Moonraker conversion, with a full length pneumatic pop-top as per the photos. The canvas is in good condition and it does not leak in wind and rain at all. There is a rock ‘n roll bed downstairs and sliding panels to create a double bed in the roof. Both beds are therefore full length beds.
Otherwise, the carpentry inside is in good condition with a little bit of peeling paint in a few places. The space is very practical, with a large space under the worktop to the right of the hob (which also contains the gas cylinder for the heater and the 2-way gas/ electric fridge – the fridge gets fantastically cold using the gas), plus two larder cupboards and two drawers under the hob, a hidey hole at floor level that’s ideal for shoes, a big space under the rear seat and another handy cupboard under the buddy seat.
The two gas hobs are fully functional and there is a toasting grill below which we haven’t really had any success with. The pump for the small sink works but it’s far easier to use campsite facilities most of the time. There is a strip light above the hob and we tend to use the battery powered push lights that you can stick to the ceiling and a camping lantern for extra lighting.
There is a large rear cupboard for storing big bags and some shelves at the very rear of the van. There is a stowaway table and strut to set it up inside, with a folding seat from the buddy seat to allow 4 to sit at a table in the van. There is also a tripod leg to set the table up outside.
In terms of seatbelts, please note that only one of the rear seatbelts is 3-point – the other is a lap belt due to the furniture getting in the way of any potential anchoring point. As a result, we have always ridden with one adult in the back and a child in the front seat, so please bear in mind if none of your children are big enough to ride in the front. As an indication, our eldest went in the front on her booster seat when she was 9.
He’s a 4-speed petrol van with a 1984cc engine and a single carburetor set-up. Engine had new tinwork around it two years ago and the carb was taken off and cleaned and jets have been cleaned very recently. It runs very well but like all these old vans, you need to be gentle with the accelerator!
Bodywork in generally very good condition with a bit of bubbling in places and the roof gutter has a bit of rust, which will need some attention. Lengths of gutter can be bought inexpensively from the likes of Heritage Parts Centre or Just Kampers. We have around 7 years’ of history in terms of servicing and work done to it and its last few MOTs. It is registered as a classic car and therefore there is no requirement for an MOT anymore and it’s road tax exempt.
This is one of the last T2 bays produced in Germany - built in 1979 and first registered in March 1980. The T3 began production in May 1979, so this is likely to be one of the very last off the production line. We believe it was originally purple but it has been Mexican Beige for at least 20 years. The pop up canvas was also replaced within that period and it has been reupholstered and the interior painted within that timeframe too.
