2021 Pilgrim Sumo MKIII Ford XR4i based Cobra Replica.
This has been an ongoing project since early 2000’s and was finally completed in 2021. It has been professionally constructed around a MKIII body / chassis and the running gear of a Sierra XR4i with a rebuilt Ford Cologne V6.
I have a crate full of paperwork detailing all the receipts / photos of build, the basic build was not completed by me, I had to finish the interior, inner wings, install IVA seat belt strengthening and prepare it for its IVA test. It passed the IVA test in 2021, and I was commended by the tester on the quality of the build.
The Sumo is registered as a new car as at 1st August 2021 so is not due its first MOT until later this year. For the XR4 engine I had a manufacture date and receipts for a rebuild, but was still given a Q plate. This was during lockdown plus the DVLA were on strike most of the time, so I took the Q plate with a view to purchasing a crate 289 V8 180 bhp engine with all the paperwork and then re-applying for a new registration.
However, with the car on the road the engine has proved to be powerful enough and great fun, plus reliable and cheap to run. I was very surprised how fuel efficient it was on my run to the Dijon Classic with a bunch of mates who had V8's. The fuel injection proved temperamental so I changed to Webber carburettors (all receipts available). It is running the Sierra 5 speed gearbox, and surprised our group how quick it was.
I have done 1800 trouble free miles, including trips to Goodwood and various local classic car shows and last year a round trip to the Dijon Classic.
The tyres are Mecotra 510’s dated 2018 and are all in good state of tread. It has only done 1, 800 miles!
The bodywork is in good condition with no cracking or paint fading, as expected from the low mileage. There are a few chips in the paintwork.
Interior is also in excellent condition although the gear lever and handbrake gaiters will need replacing. I am looking to replace these in the next few weeks.
Much additional work has gone into a new Pilgrim carpet set, boot carpet / trim detailing, fitting of front inner wings etc too much to list and remember so probably best to discuss over phone. This car needs to be seen to verify its quality.
Comes with crate of paperwork, V5 with me as the 1st owner. No hood but will include a nice matching car cover.
This car sounds great, obviously not quite the burble of a V8 but I am suitably happy with it. It turns heads on every trip as Cobras do, I have not gone for any stripes but these can easily be added if you like that style. It is not a stupidly hard the ride but is comfortable and the it handles amazingly. Suspension is fully independent all round, even the wife likes coming out for trip in this car which makes a change! It is also running standard belts, I have had 3 and 4 point harnesses in other cars and they can be a pain, I have not felt the need for full harnesses in this but again they could easily be installed.
