1983 Mercedes 200D (W123) manual saloon with 91k original miles backed up with a full set MOTs dating back to 1987. Current MOT until April 2025. Historic tax class, so exempt from ULEZ and CAZ charges, zero car tax and no MOT requirement. The car was manufactured in Germany in September 1983 and originally destined for Pakistan, but it was first registered in London in March 1984.
The 200D is a rare car in the UK, although they were very common throughout Europe, Asia and Africa. Most were basic models, but this particular one is an unusually high specification in Manganese Brown Metallic paint and Henna (dark) Red interior, with 4 electric windows, electric sunroof, rear headrests, Behr air conditioning, 5 alloy wheels, Becker Europa 4-band radio/ cassette and power steering. The 4-speed manual gearbox is better than an automatic for getting the most out of smaller diesel engine and still returning respectable fuel economy even by today’s standards. Although not a fast car, it can keep up on the motorway and is very easy to drive around town given the excellent turning radius. (Economy, manoeuvrability, and legendary reliability are all part of the reason these cars were the favourite taxis in so many countries around the world, with some still performing that role today.)
The car comes with an impressive file of service invoices and documentation including the original owner’s manual and 3 keys (1 chauffeur’s key). 4 new Goodyear 4Seasons tyres and good Michelin spare in the boot. Invoices documenting thousands of pounds of work done during my ownership over the last couple of years. Until I bought it, the car had spent all its life in suburban London. All of the former keepers had the same surname until the last. The previous owner bought the car 14 years ago and although he kept it in use, he put fewer than 5, 000 miles on it during that time.
The engine always starts up instantly, even in cold weather. With free road tax, good fuel economy and classic car insurance, this is a very economical classic car to run. The current MOT should provide some assurance of the state of roadworthiness (inspections welcome), As a 40-year-old car, however, there are signs of age, which can be seen from the photos. Thankfully, being a Mercedes, service parts are readily available and even trim and interior can be sourced without much difficulty in most cases (even the original cloth is still available). Viewing is very much encouraged. I am very happy to take you for a drive, and if you can show proof of insurance, you can test drive. Please ask me about all the work done recently and what could on the list for a future date. I am a Mercedes enthusiast, not a dealer so I can’t offer finance, etc. and this is a private sale.
