Description

1957 Triumph TR6 Trophy 650cc in superb restored condition!

This absolutely delightful matching numbers Trophy, is in excellent all-round condition, having been restored with a fortune spent on new parts, she is in first class order all round and is an absolute head-turner in every respect, having been subject to a full restoration, and is guaranteed to draw a crowd wherever she goes!

She has had little use since I bought her 3 years ago, fully restored, and she has sat in my collection in my heated garage, but has been started-up regularly and run-up to temperature, though she rides perfectly and is ready for her next owner to enjoy as I am thinning my collection down a bit.

Launched in 1956, the Trophy was an instant hit in the all-important USA market and in its debut year, finished 1-2-3 in the famous Big Bear Run in California’s Mojave Desert and in doing so, cemented its reputation as a great off-road competition machine. Starting on the desert floor, they raced 150 miles to Big Bear Lake, climbing to 7, 000 feet at the summit and this victory quickly established the Trophy’s reputation as a ‘Desert Sled’.

The TR6 Trophy featured the new Delta aluminium-alloy cylinder head, which was borrowed from the Tiger 110 roadster. With a single Amal Monobloc carburettor and running 8. 5:1 compression pistons, the TR6 engine churned out a useful 42hp, which could be put to good use in the Mojave Desert and the scrubland of Southern California. They were fitted with a smaller fuel tank for off-road use along with a high-level, two into one exhaust and in 1957, they were given the distinctive new two-tone paint scheme and the newly introduced harmonica style tank badges.

In addition the steering-head angle was adjusted to ensure much sharper tuning in the dirt and a new bigger 8” single leading shoe front brake, with larger air scoop improved braking. It was enthusiastically adopted by the legend that is Bud Eakins and later Steve McQueen rode one, in its later iteration that developed, and the model dominated the Californian desert racing scene in the late ’50’s and 1960’s.

This Trophy was manufactured on the 7th February 1957 and despatched on the very next day to the Triumph Corporation in Baltimore, such was the demand in the USA for these competition derived machines and she was specified with a QD (Quickly Detachable) competition rear wheel. She was brought back into the UK in 2021 and then underwent a full restoration and she has had a fortune spent on her. Fitted with new wheels, tyres, forks, seat, shocks, engine re-build, new paint and much more and looking superb in Aztec Red and Cream, the paintwork and chrome are superb all round, and she looks excellent.

The bike was was then purchased by me and I got a dating certificate from the Triumph Owners Motorcycle Club, confirming matching numbers and registered her for the road with the DVLA, with a correct age related plate and she has sat in my collection in my heated garage for the last few years and has been regularly started-up and brought up to temperature. I noticed recently that she wasn’t keen on starting-up again, when warm -classic magneto issues and sent off the magneto to the guy who does mine for me and he confirmed that it was a few years old and starting to break down, so it was fully refurbished and re-wound at a cost of almost £400 and she starts as she should now.

The bike, classed as Historic, is MOT exempt and tax free and the she has recently been thoroughly gone through and serviced by my mechanic, with new fluids, plugs, battery etc and she is all ready for her next owner. She is a nice easy starting bike and sounds wonderful through her correct high-level exhaust.

The bike comes with a folder of paperwork; with a Dating Certificate from the TOMC confirming she is a matching numbers bike, a factory Triumph workshop manual, an original Instruction Manual, various import paperwork and correspondence with the DVLA, recent receipts and the V5 is in my name.
