Description
Here goes the age old story of another project I bought but haven’t got around to… I’ll admit, this is one project I really wanted to complete, but if it sells to a good home in the meantime then I won’t be offended! If you’re interested in a UK supplied 70s two stroke RHD Wartburg Knight then please read on. This is a project but no basket case, willing to listen to a reasonable offer to the right home but please no silly offers as I will be keeping it to finish it if not sold!
This is a 1975 Wartburg Knight mk4, one of the last sold here in the UK in RHD form before the emissions rules stopped Wartburg exports. It was used from 1975 to 1990 by a bloke in Bristol and after an MOT fail was sold and parked up in a barn in South Wales. It stayed in this barn from 1990 ish until a couple of years ago when I bought it and moved it to my lockup. I did nothing to the car and ended up with around 10 other Wartburgs (that’s a long story) so I went about shifting most of them.
The car ended up with Simon Clamp, any of those in the Wartburg circles will know Simon for being a knowledgeable figure with strong club ties in his family and this car was looked after in his ownership. Better seats were fitted and Simon had the car running and driving. His plan was to sort the brakes and get the paint sorted but unfortunately personal circumstances stopped his project work and he sold the car back to me. I don’t have enough interior storage for all of my projects so this car is now stored elsewhere and if it can be sold before finding a garage space with me then that’s ideal.
In terms of condition it ultimately does want a respray but does have a fun patina look if you’re that way inclined. It’s no rot box and is actually really good underneath with only few signs of previous plates, I’d suggest the driver’s side front sill wants some more work due to some corrosion but otherwise this is a really good solid car and well worth fixing up. The handbrake works well but the brakes need work, I’d suggest a full overhaul at this age, a drum has been removed and put in the car to allow easy rolling (when tyres are pumped up it rolls well) and the brake cylinder is seized so a new one will be included with the sale.
The car will run with a battery and ignition housing (Simon required these for his other Wartburg), a spare housing needing new points will be included for the new owner. The exhaust needs replacement however and the carb needs adjusting as you have to keep the revs on a tad for idle, but again at this age/ amount of storage time I’d suggest a rebuild of this anyway. The car does run and rev up and holds temperature also so shouldn’t need major work but any inspection welcomed and very much suggested. Any interest please let me know. Plenty more photos available on request. Asking £2250 ono, close offers invited but I’m still tempted to finish the project when I can anyway so no silly offers please! This is a rare car and ultimately worth good money on the mainland with Wartburg collectors paying good money for the RHD gimmick.
Tax and MOT exemption available at this age, v5 in hand. Will need transporting away from Cardiff, can aid with loading, winch recommended! In addition - grille and light lenses etc with some other spare seats are included and on the back seat!
