In 2009, the Mercedes ML63 AMG was the king of SUV’s. With the 6. 3 litre naturally aspirated V8 producing no less than 510 hp and 630 Nm of torque, it was absolutely the best of what was offered at the time. This giant sprints from 0 to 100 in just five seconds and continues until the electronically limited top of 155 mph is reached. The stability with which all this is done is very impressive, as is the braking power. Yet the car is never seen as stiff, but as very comfortable in combination with unique driving characteristics.
When starting, you immediately notice the beautiful, typical rumble of the V8 engine, partly due to the lack of turbos. Linked to the 7G automatic gearbox, acceleration is extremely smooth, but the chassis is even more impressive. In addition to the AMG sports suspension, the Airmatic package provides the finishing touch. Airmatic is an air suspension system with level control. At high speeds, adjustable air springs automatically lower the body to reduce air resistance. The ground clearance can be increased on uneven surfaces. This, in combination with the adaptive damping system, ensures that you can actually adapt the car to any surface.
This being a 2010 car, the ML 63 AMG went through the process of the facelift in 2009. The massive, two-ton super-SUV, featured a grille with two horizontal bars and the big, three-star logo includes the Distronic system (option) in the middle. The bumper featured an additional grille and scoops for cooling the brakes and other radiators. The headlights and the taillights were slightly revised when compared to its predecessor. The new, twin-spoke wheel design was fitted as standard, unlike the star-design with a simple five-spoke from the pre-facelift model. In the back, two chromed twin exhausts stamped with the AMG letters were a final touch to the performance SUV.
Inside, the steering wheel featured a new design, with perforated leather on the grip area. A Nappa-trim was available as an option for the dashboard. The telematics system featured the Audio 20 fitted as standard. The car was offered with optional voice-commands which this one has.
Under the hood, the ML 63 AMG features the 6. 2-liter V8 engine. It is still naturally aspirated and offers 510 hp. The power is transferred via the AMG SPEEDSHIFT 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission with three drive modes (Confort, Sport, Manual).
Drivers may initially find the location of the gear selector a little odd – on the end of a stalk by the steering wheel. This ‘stick selector’ (see photo) requires the driver to simply pull up for reverse and down for drive. This was adopted by E-Class and S-Class too.
The driving position is comfortable with multiple electric adjustments and the option of heated and ventilated front seats is fitted.
The steering wheel adjusts (electrically) for reach and height. The multi-function steering wheel allows the driver to control many of the car’s functions – such as the stereo, trip computer, telephone, Voice-Command, etc…
The well proportioned interior can carry five adults in comfort. The ride, in standard mode, is acceptable over most conditions and can be changed at the push of a button to be either a comfortable or sporty set-up. Elsewhere, there’s plenty of head and legroom for all passengers and superb sound insulation.
The hand-built 6. 2-litre V8 in the front of the ML63 has 510 bhp, is capable of 0-62mph in five seconds and has top speed of 155mph. It’s the same engine that’s also found in the C63 and CLK63 – among others – and will be noticeably different to anyone trading up from the old ML55 AMG as there’s 46 per cent more power. The rate of acceleration is little short of breathtaking and it builds speed in a truly remarkable way – the ML63 is barely warmed-up by the time it gets to the motorway speed limit.
The steering wheel-mounted paddles give the option of being able to make manual changes, or the seven-speed gearbox can be left in fully automatic, where it mostly chooses the right gear for the right time and offers a smooth change.
With its huge 21-inch alloy wheels (Mercedes option), this ML63 never feels anything other than planted to the road. It corners well with bodyroll kept in check and the sophisticated four-wheel drive system provides a reassuring back-up in slippery conditions. It’s effortless on the motorway, very stable and capable of being driven more quickly than the 70mph speed limit will allow.
No major issues have been identified since the ML63 model went on sale in 2006. The build quality is excellent and as long as it’s well cared for, should prove to be very durable.
As well as being the ultimate M-Class, the ML63 AMG was also one of the fastest and most powerful 4x4s that money can buy. The hand-built 510bhp V8 powers it to 62mph in 5. 0 seconds. This rare ML 63 is in excellent condition with a Full Service History (Mercedes and Specialists) and showing a low 64000 miles for the year.
It is one of the last produced before the next generation and is rather rare in its true atmospheric 6. 2cc form.
