Rare 1986 phase 1 Peugeot 205 GTI 1. 6 (115bhp) non sun roof. £15000
( according to howmanyleft. co. uk this car is one of only 24 (1986 cars) licensed and one of 165 on SORN )
4 previous owners from new, last previous owner for 13 years and off the road stored in a garage for 7 years prior to the previous owners purchase.
Hence the low mileage of 73000 miles. MOT history from 1996. Last MOT September 2024 with no advisories.
I bought this car in March 2017 as a good clean example of this early original hot hatch ( as a known correct car in the Peugeot 205GTI community) with the intention of sympathetically restoring it to its former glory.
After 13 months with the renown Peugeot expert Carl Chambers, over 150 hours of labour and many hours researching and sourcing original Peugeot parts the work is now complete. The seats now having been re-upholstered in matching fabric and the seat bolsters replaced.
The following work has been carried out;
Car completely stripped down including engine, gearbox, suspension and interior removed. Body cleaned to assess condition. No major areas of rust or damage were found, apart from a small area of rust on the bulk head under the brake master cylinder. This area was correctly repaired.
Underside of car fully cleaned, boot floor stripped back to bare metal, rust proofed and stone chipped. The underside and engine bay was fully repainted body colour.
Rear beam stripped and rebuilt using new bearings, arm shafts and mounts.
Gearbox striped, overhauled and cleaned by specialist.
Engine checked for compression, serviced, cam belt changed and cleaned. New replacement hose pack sourced and fitted. New water pump.
Sub frame and spare tyre carrier powder coated.
New front dampers and correct springs fitted with new discs.
New copper brake lines and new handbrake cables fitted.
Correct matching Speedline wheels sourced, refurbished and fitted with correct Michelin tyres.
External surfaces have had minor dents on roof repaired from when the car was stored in a garage for 7 years and “ stuff” was stored on top of car !! Then prepared and resprayed in original Peugeot white.
Correct orange front indicators, side repeaters and driving lights.
New original specification red aluminium bumper and trim inserts sourced from Peugeot museum.
Correct original spec Phillips radio cassette
Original carpet cleaned and new underlay fitted.
All other items cleaned, checked and refitted.
New secondary manual radiator fan fitted operated from original switch on dash.
New original 205 wiper blades !
Upon completion of the work the car was independently inspected and valued at £14000 in 2018 providing a full condition and assessment report with the summary stating “The vehicle is a very good example of its type, quite possibly the ultimate example on the road, condition wise in the UK, I feel, especially rare being an early 1. 6 litre edition”
I have lots of photos showing the restoration, including the car in its “original” condition, and the list above only details the major works carried out and doesn’t reflect the time and effort spent by Carl and myself sourcing from both his workshop and specialist correct nuts, bolts, screws, trims etc to ensure that this car is as near original as possible.
The car drives faultlessly and is great fun. However I have now relived my youth and its time for another enthusiast to have some fun.
Stored in dry modern garage under a purpose made car cover.
