For sale is my 2001 E39 540i M-Sport with nearly 113k miles on the clock. Having had an E39 530i M-Sport in the past, I thought I’d enjoy one of these as part of my lifelong BMW journey (which started with an E30 320i in 1989). And what a different car it is! The 4. 4 litre V8 is just wonderful. This car handles the increased power effortlessly. As you will see from the photos, it is in excellent condition. All-original panels. During my ownership I have replaced the original, very tired “aluminium” interior trim with a beautiful “individual” dark birch trim – a rare find in a right-hand drive version. I’ve also replaced the passenger-side doorway “M” trims, front and back. For some reason the rubber component was quite degenerated. The Xenon headlight external gaskets and windscreen washer hose system have been replaced. I knew the gearbox was not quite right when I bought it, slipping slightly between changes, and I had this completely overhauled, and the torque-convertor replaced by a ZF specialist (£3500). The 18" M-Parallel wheels had been refurbished just before my ownership, but I replaced the tyres with Michelin PS5’s last year (265's rear/ 235's front). Rocker cover gaskets were replaced earlier this year. It had new front brakes 2000 miles ago.
Points to note: The radio/ multi-disc CD side of the infotainment system has never worked, but that never bothered me. The car on-board computer is fine. It could well be a simple fix. There is a slight “tick” at idle coming from the left bank VANOS, as diagnosed by a local BMW Independent specialist. The chain-guide tensioner has been checked, and so I’ve never felt inclined to have the VANOS looked at, because there is no impairment in performance. There is also a small oil leak which has remained constant at about 5 mls per month which I have left alone.
I’m happy to leave my private plate on the car, but will return it to the the original period-correct plate LC51 RVN on sale, if preferred. It is clear that it has been been garaged all its life, including its time with me.
