Description
Range Rover Vogue SE 4. 2 Supercharged
The L322 Range Rover is fast becoming a classic and the 4. 2 Supercharged is arguably the strongest and most reliable of the drivetrains that were available, particularly when registered before April 2006 and subject to lower road tax (£430) . My Bonatti Grey example has the two-tone cream leather interior with black inserts and is in excellent condition for a 19-year-old, which wears its patina very well. There are a few cosmetic imperfections which can be seen in the photos but mechanically it is superb and has been maintained to the highest standard. The car has covered 129k miles and the engine, transmission and suspension are faultless.
As a Vogue SE spec car, it is fitted with climate control, cruise control, electric heated seats, the Harman Kardon Logic Stereo, electric sunroof, heated steering wheel, CD, DVD and rear TV screens (although I don’t think the rear TV screens work as there is a fault code -see photos).
It has 4 previous owners and benefits from a strong history which demonstrates how well it has been looked after. The first owner had it serviced at Land Rover Main dealer at 6. 5k, 12. 8k, 23k and 31. 5k miles in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. The service history resumes in 2015 and it has been serviced every year since 2017.
The third owner from 2017-2023 was fastidious and in 2021 spent £4, 500 on a very comprehensive service. The fourth owner only owned the car for 6 months but replaced the front brakes (Brembo) during his ownership. Unfortunately he had been flooded out of his home and needed to sell the Range Rover to raise some well needed funds.
In my ownership I’ve spent a lot of time (and money) ensuing it remains a well-loved, solid and good example of this iconic car. I’d had the car serviced (twice) at our highly regarded local Land Rover specialist (including gearbox service), replaced the gear linkage selector and radiator header tank (both well know problems with these cars), replaced the air-conditioning condenser, replaced the aftermarket 22” wheels with the standard 9 spoke silver alloys (which I’ve just had refurbished so they are like new) and fitted new Pirelli Zeros (less than 3k miles). There was some very minor bubbling on the rear wheel arches which I’ve had professionally resprayed, and the body shop commented that this is one of the most solid L322s that he has seen. I’ve got the rubber seals to go back on to the arches but have left them off for now so you can see how solid the car is in this known weak spot.
There was also a small dent on the (otherwise solid) tailgate which was repaired at the same time. The car also arrived with a huge rubber front bull bar and as I thought it detracted from the look, I’ve removed this and replaced the front bumper and grill, but retained the highly desirable (and expensive) light guards. at the same time I removed the side steps and replaced the front mudguards. I’ve also just replaced the bottom of the front valance and tow hitch cover, which is missing in some of the photos, but I’ve also included photos of the completed front end.
I’ve replaced rubber footwell mats front and rear and also managed to source a genuine rubber mat for the boot area (difficult to get hold of genuine ones with the Land River logo on them).
The MOT is valid until October and the previous MOT only failed due to the hand brake which has been rectified. The previous advisories for suspension bushes were also replaced during the last service. I’ve done a Vehicle Check Report on the car which is clear and I’m happy to share that with any prospective purchaser. The L322 was in my opinion the sweet spot of Range Rovers, luxurious, fast, quiet, peerless on and off road and still insurable (I pay £300 on a limited mileage classic car policy). The early TD6 diesels and BMW engined V8 petrols have their known problems but the 4. 2 Jaguar based V8 is generally regarded as bullet proof and is by far the best engine in early L322s (before the 4. 4 TDV8 came
along).
As you would expect the performance is exhilarating and the sonorous exhaust note is somewhat addictive. Naturally if you use the performance the MPG suffers but overall it returns about 18 mpg and you can get into the mid twenties on a run with a gentle right foot. There is nothing else quite like the smooth ride and performance and I always arrive at my destination with a smile on my face. I’ve done 6000 miles since owning this car and I will really miss the Range Rover driving experience.
I’m slowing working my way through owning all of Solihull’s finest products and bought this Range Rover after a long and thorough search in Feb 2024. Unfortunately, my wish to own either a Discovery 3 or 4 means the Range Rover has to go due to lack of space, since I’ve also got a Series 3 and a 2012 Defender.
I am located in Derbyshire and of course am more than happy to show you round the car and answer any genuine questions that you may have. I know from my search that there are a lot of L322s out there and many of them are not even worth going to look at. This is not one of them as it is a very sound car that has been extremely well looked after, and I’ve priced it realistically based on condition.
I can only hope that there is a knowledgeable enthusiast out there who appreciates the virtues of these amazing vehicles and will invest in what I think will be future classic as they are tremendous value for money at the moment.
Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you are interested and treat yourself to a piece of Solihull’s finest.
