Description
This is a very drivable example of BMW’s 2002 tii classic sports car. This model variant was launched in 1971 and used a mechanical fuel injection system by Kugelfischer, enabling it to deliver 130bhp from a 2 litre engine. At the end of last year there were only 133 tii’s on the road in the U. K.
The car has a great visual impact, when being driven, and its light weight and gearing mean that it’s very nimble.
I bought it 9 years ago and wanted to have a car that I could drive but also do project work on. Although it is MOT exempt, I have tried to keep the MOT current, for my own peace of mind. In the past I have driven it often from Hertfordshire into London, before moving from the South East. I have avoided driving it in the wet or in the winter.
To be realistic the condition of the car would probably be classed as ‘fair’. The interior needs tidying, particularly the backs, of the front seats. There are some spots of corrosion underneath the car that could be dealt with and there’s some corrosion on the edges of the boot lid and a few other places. From the history I have, it looks like the engine was changed in the 1980’s, so this is not a matching numbers car. The mileage reading has also been reset at least once. The previous owner told me that it had done 116, 000 more miles than indicated. If that’s correct it would have covered just over 150, 000 miles.
The main benefit of this example is that is offers a relatively low cost way of being able to enjoy a car that is great to drive, being light weight, but benefiting from an amazingly designed mechanical fuel injection system. It has a new MOT. I have a lever arch file full of history for this car. This is a brief summary:
Since 2016:
Major service at Jaymic and some remedial work when I first bought the car.
New Clutch.
Repairs to corrosion at the base of the front windscreen pillars and new windscreen rubber seal.
Replacement of some of the components in the gear change linkage.
New engine mounts.
Replacement of one of the rear subframe mounting points.
Professional refurbishment of the front brake calipers.
New brake pads and linings.
Fitment of Polyflex ARB bushes to the front of the car.
Replacement of voltage regulator.
Fitting of a front valence repair panel.
Regular oil changes.
2007 to 2016
The car was owned by someone in North London who used it as his daily driver all year round. He kept the car maintained and I have a lot of receipts for work he had done. Including some repair work to the engine in 2007.
1995:
The car was restored by Jaymic in the mid 1990’s and I have correspondence relating to that. I also have a receipt where it was sold a few years later by the owner who had commissioned the restoration work.
1988:
This seems to have been the first initiative to restore the car. Undertaken by the then owner, who was a mechanic. I have a lot of receipts for components that he bought.
The car was originally blue, when manufactured, but the colour was changed during one of the restorations. Also, as mentioned, the history indicates that the engine was changed in the 1980’s.
For anyone with sufficient interest, just the paper work on its own would make an interesting study.
