Description
A lovely example of a Series 3 XJ6 which had a body restoration in 2014 with many new parts including both front wings, front and rear valances, lower tank panels, rear bumper chrome, and full re spray. Some mechanical parts were replaced including front and rear shocks, front ball joints, and one fuel tank. It was MoT'd and briefly on the road before being put in storage where it has been for the last 11 years, awaiting final finishing of a few cosmetic bits and pieces. It was brought out of hibernation a few weeks ago with a new starter motor and one brake calliper just fitted. It starts and runs fine although I have not had it out on the road as it is not insured. It will need a service, plugs and fluids changing (ideally hoses too) and the engine bay could do with cleaning up after years in storage. This is an enthusiast's dream as there are no body issues to worry about, just mechanical or electrical tinkering. It was a decent solid example even before the restoration, with solid sills and floors. The interior is in good but not perfect condition with some lifting of the centre console veneer. Headlining is excellent with none of the usual sagging. Door cards were upgraded to Daimler spec with inlaid veneers. The areas requiring attention are mainly either unfinished items or minor faults due to being unused for over a decade. They include: Front door cheater inserts have cosmetic rust (the small triangle at the corner of the window), inner cheaters not fitted but present, lower front wing badges not fitted (present), electric door mirrors were working but now aren't, headlamps have been temperamental which we traced to a poor fuse connection but now seem ok, electric aerial doesn't work. The boot lining was plain black but I sourced good used carpeted Sovereign spec side panels which require fitting. The boot carpet is missing. No body issues except there is some pimpling of the lacquer on the roof and boot lid. New tyres were fitted in 2014 and have had hardly any use but will need replacing due to age. I do remember the steering feeling a bit vague the last time I drove it in 2014 which could be tracking or steering rack mountings.
Colour is Cobalt Blue with Biscuit leather interiorIn summary, when I started with the restoration it was never intended to be a concours car, just to be a solid and presentable example. One thing led to another and I ended up replacing more parts than intended. The welding and painting was done professionally. While still not quite show standard, it is a lovely looking car which needs only tinkering and recommissioning rather than serious work. There are many Series 3s out there which look nice but beneath the surface are hiding rust and filler, particularly around the front wings, wheelarches and below the windscreen. You will have none of those problems with this car.
