Description

1960 Mercedes-Benz 190SL

Presented here is an exceptional example of the iconic Mercedes-Benz 190SL, a model that has become one of the most desirable and collectible classic roadsters of its era. First introduced at the 1954 New York Auto Show, the 190SL (W121) was developed as a more accessible alternative to the legendary 300SL, combining elegant styling, advanced engineering, and refined touring comfort. It quickly earned its reputation as a symbol of sophistication and class throughout the late 1950s and early 1960s.

This particular 190SL has been restored to a very high standard, finished in a timeless and understated grey exterior complemented beautifully by a deep red leather interior and matching soft-top cover. The paintwork is immaculate and displays an excellent depth of finish, while the brightwork and chrome details shine to a concours-level polish.

The cabin presents superbly with fresh burgundy leather seats, new door cards, and period-correct carpeting. Of particular note is the inclusion of the optional third seat, a rare and desirable feature. Positioned behind the two main seats, this occasional-use jump seat was offered by Mercedes-Benz as an accessory and is seldom seen in surviving cars. It adds both collectible value and versatility, ideal for a child or extra luggage when touring. The dash and instrumentation retain their original charm, with clear dials and a classic ivory steering wheel that enhances the vintage character. An original Becker Europa radio remains in place, retaining the authentic 1960s ambiance. Mechanically, the car is in excellent condition, benefitting from recent attention to ensure it performs as well as it looks.
The engine pulls well, and the manual gearbox shifts cleanly through all four gears. The car retains its original Solex carburettors, making it a correct and desirable specification for collectors and enthusiasts alike.

We have proudly maintained this vehicle since 2011. It remains a matching numbers example, retaining its original engine and drivetrain components, key factors in authenticity and long‑term value. Significantly, this is one of just 562 factory-built right‑hand drive 190SLs ever produced, a configuration that represents barely 2% of the total production. With so few RHD units made, this car stands out as extremely rare and desirable in the collector’s market

This car is accompanied by extensive service history and documentation, including numerous receipts, invoices, and records spanning many years. The history file reflects consistent maintenance and careful ownership, both during its restoration and post-completion. The mechanical work, interior and body restoration were all carried out to a high standard by respected specialists, with detailed records to support the care and investment this vehicle has received.

The presence of such a comprehensive history file adds significantly to the car’s credibility and collectability, offering peace of mind to the next custodian. This 190SL is a true driver’s car that also presents as a strong investment opportunity. Its meticulous restoration and elegant specification make it an ideal candidate for shows, weekend touring, or simply to enjoy as part of a fine collection.
