"This rig is the best handling bike I’ve ever owned!" - Steve McQueen. Originally developed by brothers Derek and Don Rickman, the Mettise, meaning "mongrel" in French, was a bespoke desert scrambler frame, built up using mechanicals from various leading motorcycles of the day. Steve McQueen, a keen amateur off-road racer when he wasn't in front of the camera, favoured the Triumph-engined Metisse, which featured the firm's legendary 650cc parallel twin.
The company exists to this day as Mettise Motorcycles, building beautiful replicas of the McQueen spec bikes. These limited production machines capture the essence of McQueen's desert racing exploits with period-correct styling and impressive off-road capabilities. This particular example represents a rare opportunity to acquire an essentially brand new McQueen Desert Scrambler, having been purchased directly from Metisse in Oxfordshire in 2010 and meticulously preserved in vacuum storage since. Complete with its certificate of authenticity, original documentation, and in very good condition, this motorcycle offers the chance to own a piece of motorcycling heritage that pays homage to one of the most celebrated Hollywood stars and motorcycle enthusiasts.
