Description

During the 1950s, when Mercedes-Benz dominated top level motorsport, the firm’s road-going flagship was the breathtaking 300 SL. However, with its price well beyond the reach of most enthusiasts, Mercedes-Benz sought to offer similar glamour and engineering in a more accessible package. The result was the 190 SL, introduced as the 300 SL’s smaller stablemate and built to the same high standards of design, refinement and quality.

Powered by a new, slightly over-square 1. 9-litre straight-four SOHC engine producing 120bhp via twin-choke dual Solex carburettors and mated to a 4-speed manual gearbox, the sleek and comparatively light 190 SL was capable of 115mph and 0-60mph in around 13 seconds. While its ride was more ‘boulevard’ than overtly sporting, and some rivals offered greater performance for less money, the 190 SL’s blend of elegance, build quality and long distance ability cemented Mercedes-Benz’s reputation for producing aspirational grand tourers. Unsurprisingly, most of the 26, 000 examples built were sold to the North American market.

According to the accompanying V5C, this particular 190 SL was manufactured on 12th January 1956 and is notably rare in its colour combination. It was purchased from European Collectables in the Netherlands on 12th June 2017 before being UK-registered on 1st December 2020.

An older restored example, it presents well with a deep shine to the gloss black paintwork. Inside, the original red leather interior remains intact and displays a delightful, honest patina that adds to the car’s character.

A stylish and highly desirable 1950s Mercedes-Benz roadster with UK-registration.

Just been serviced, new fuel pump, oil, filters and plugs. An elegant, UK-registered 190 SL in a rare colour combination, an older restoration with charming original interior. Possibly the best colour combination
