GMC RV 1973 diesel.
Immaculate condition and fully converted for UK.
fully restored between 2015 and 2019 by renowned GMC RV specialist Jim Bounds in Orlando Florida.
Registered as historic so no MOT required and free vehicle tax.
Only 2500 miles since restoration.
Over £150, 000 spent on chassis upwards restoration and always garaged.
This coach has spent its life in the desert states so the chassis was remarkably rust free before the restoration.
The body is a combination fibreglass and aluminium sheet/ frame so cutting edge in the early 70’s, very light and will not rust.
This is number 41 of 50 prototypes produced by GMC in 1973 and has quite a few one off items fitted from the factory and an interesting history.
The size is only 7. 9 metres long by 2. 1 metres wide so the same size as the European tag-axle motorhomes, this makes this coach very usable and will fit on most UK and continental campsites (nearly all American RV’s are 2. 4 metres wide and over 9. 2 metres long).
I have had many modifications carried out to make this RV a modern usable coach in the UK and Europe including conversion to diesel returning 18 - 20 miles to the gallon on a long run. (These are easily reversible if imported back to the USA)
Towbar fitted if you have a historic race car.
The list of items fitted is extensive but below is a list to help understand the scope of works undertaken
A) Mechanical:-
1. New AM general Optimizer 6500cc V8 crate diesel engine (as fitted to the US military Humvee and mechanical injection so absolutely bomb proof and can be worked on by any Diesel technician).
2. TH425 3 speed transmission (built by monster transmissions in Florida with torque converter matched to the diesel), again a bullet proof transmission.
3. New stainless steel bespoke fuel tank.
4. 1 tonne upgraded front suspension
5. Hydro-boost brake system.
6. Quad bag rear air ride suspension which is adjustable from the dash to level the coach when parking.
7. All new wiring and ancillaries inc brakes, cooling system, cab airconditioning, cruise control, instruments, lights, bearings, pipes etc etc etc.
8. New water cooled kubota diesel generator with remote dash in RV.
9. Fire fight automatic extinguisher system
10. 7 new Alcoa wheels with new tyres.
11. Dometic roof mounted air conditioning system.
12. Macerator pump system for the grey water tank.
13. Cruise control
14. Electric mirrors and reverse camera
The list goes on and on.
B) internal/ external domestic
1. All new interior linings to walls, ceiling and floor.
2. All new electrics and plumbing.
3. All new cabinets, doors, blinds, carpet in cab, driver/ passenger seats.
4. MAC-DADDY dash
5. Refurbished and upholstered seating giving 4 person dinette and settee opposite which easily convert into two large double beds.
6. New webasto diesel fired blown air central heating and hot water boiler.
7. Electric lifting rear double bed with large under storage area.
8. Refurbished washroom with new plumbing, quartz worktop, sink etc.
9. New Built-in Thetford cassette toilet omitting the holding tank option which is not ideal in the UK but can be easily reversed if you would prefer the original pump out system.
10. New Thetford gas cooker and oven.
11. Euro-style sink
12. Norcold RV fridge freezer with mains and 12v function.
13. 320 amp domestic solar panels (110 amp for starting batteries).
14. Zip-Dee full length roll out awning colour coded to coach.
Again the list goes on and on
We started the restoration in 2015 which lasted 4 years, I imported her back in 2020 after a couple of US touring holidays and have only used her 3 times since importing.
Life changes and 9 years after the start of our journey our kids have grown up and interests have changed so it is a crime the coach just sitting tucked up in the garage unused from one year to the next.
This will make the ultimate European tour coach or a fantastic historic race car paddock coach.
The GMC RV is an iconic recreational vehicle in the USA and was the only “chassis-up” motorhome designed and built by a major motor group in the US. They have been used many times in movies if you Google.
I am a realist and know I will never recover the money I have invested in the RV so this is a once in a lifetime, never to be repeated chance to own probably one of the best classic GMC RV ‘s in the world.
