This outstanding 300SL is one of the very last right-hand-drive R107s to leave the Mercedes-Benz factory in Stuttgart, with production of the model ending just a month earlier. Supplied new by London Road Garage (Romford) Ltd and first sold to Mr P. Gardiner, it represents the final chapter of an 18-year production run — the second longest in Mercedes-Benz history.
Although modestly optioned, this car was specified with the rare and desirable rear seat and one of the earliest factory-installed in-car telephones, still present today as a charming reminder of late-1980s innovation. Its life is well documented, supported by the original stamped service book and a complete MOT history verifying the mileage.
By 2012, with around 70, 000 miles, the car underwent restorative work commissioned by then-owner Miss J. Rex of Kent and carried out by The SL Shop, one of the UK’s foremost R107 specialists. This comprehensive work is fully invoiced and totalled nearly £9, 000.
Further restoration followed in 2017 at John Haynes — another highly regarded Mercedes specialist — including engine and gearbox rebuilds, along with suspension, steering, braking and fuel system overhauls, plus corrosion repairs to body and chassis. This work alone exceeded £13, 000 and is supported by detailed photographs and invoices.
The car later moved to Wales under the ownership of Mr P. Clutton, who continued to maintain it with care. In 2019, at 73, 000 miles, it received a full main-dealer service at Mercedes-Benz Cardiff/ Newport costing £1, 909. Across just 3, 000 miles of driving, more than £23, 700 was invested in restoration and upkeep.
Purchased again in 2020 from a respected classic car dealership in Louth, the car has since covered only 2, 000 additional miles. It continues to drive superbly, requiring nothing beyond routine servicing. Today, this 300SL stands as a beautifully preserved example from Mercedes-Benz’s golden era — elegant, meticulously engineered, and maintained to a standard rarely seen.
Two high-quality leather-bound folders accompany the car, containing all paperwork in chronological order, along with the original handbooks and stamped service book.
