Description
The R129 model was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 1989 and soon won the public’s favour as one of the most effective blends of style and technology.
Under the simple yet elegant lines, designed by Bruno Sacco, lay a very sophisticated mechanicals, characterised by extensive use of electronics and advanced safety systems.
Among the innovations introduced by the new model were the automatic-activated roll-bar, which protrudes in a fraction of a second in the event of a rollover, and the electro-hydraulic-operated folding roof, which disappears into a dedicated rear compartment. Also for safety, there was the ASR anti-slip system (shared management with the ABS system) which first acted by lightly braking the slipping wheel and second by cutting the engine’s power delivery.
Aesthetically, the R129 appears much more modern and elegant than the preceding R107 that it replaces.
The lines are tighter, the front end closely echoes that of the big C126-series coupé, but more inclined, more aggressive and even more pleasant to look at. The waistline is slightly inclined forward compared with the previous roadster, and this aspect also gives a pronounced dynamic in the car’s silhouette.
Overall, whether with the hood up or down, the R129 preserves its elegance as few other roadsters do.
The styling mix of modernity and retro flair is perfectly achieved, the latter evident for example on the front fenders, where small air intakes recall those used in the 1950s on the 300SL “Gull-Wwing” (Ali di gabbiano).
As for the interiors, one should note the magnesium-framed seats, which also feature seat-integrated seatbelts with a built-in reel. Obviously the dashboard and the driver’s area are richly appointed with premium materials and exemplary finishes.
The car we are proposing, part of the first series, is presented in the original anthracite metallic colour with lighter-colour inserts paired with a premium black leather interior, which can seat up to four people, thanks to the rear bench and 16-inch 8-spoke design wheels.
It is equipped with the famous 5. 0-litre V8 engine producing 320 hp, paired with a five-speed automatic gearbox, and its extensive equipment includes:
Front heated seats
Electric seats with memory
Automatic climate control
Becker Exquisit radio with 6-CD changer
Central armrest with cassette holder
On this version up to 1995 the hard top was standard and is, of course, present.
Registered in 1995, it retains its original plates and boasts only 159, 000 km, certified by various Mercedes concessionaire invoices (for an amount exceeding €20, 000) proving the care lavished on it by its previous owner and placing it on the podium of best-preserved cars in circulation.
The Italian vehicle register inscription dated 04/ 2015 completes its documentation.
