Description

If you’re looking at this, you’ll probably already know that until Ducati launched the 750 GT, they’d only built single cylinder bikes of different capacities. The 750 was their first twin cylinder and arguably, the most important motorcycle in Ducati’s history. Honda launched their CB 750/ 4 superbike in 1969 and Ducati were in danger of getting left behind. By 1970 most major motorcycle manufacturers were either producing their version of a superbike, or had one in the pipeline. With limited resources, Ducati approached the superbike concept differently, basically creating a 90-degree twin out of two existing overhead camshaft singles. The resulting 750 twin was immediately successful. Less than a year after its introduction the 750 GT formed the basis of the Imola 200 race-winning model and it established a blueprint for Ducati motorcycles that would characterise the company for the next forty-five years.
Here is my 1974 model that underwent a mild restoration very shortly before I bought it in Aug 2003. It’s the only one I’ve seen with the original airbox, genuine Conti exhausts and even OE indicator lenses that I had to import from USA. It is fitted with period Lucas electronic ignition and original, working switchgear . When the bike was restored, by the previous owner, the tank badges were removed and replaced with (arguably) the more aesthetically pleasing Ducati decals, but the original tank badges are included in the sale, as is a genuine side stand, also from USA, plus a caliper and 4-hole disc, should the new owner wish to upgrade to a twin disc set up. The bike was ridden by me for a couple of years , then dry stored for the last 20 years.
The bike is priced realistically , giving the new owner the option of recommissioning, fully restoring to concourse or as a basis for 750 ss green frame replica.
Values of the much rarer 750 round case V twins are still rising world wide , as witnessed at Bonhams Winter Sale 5-15 December 2025. They are excellent investments , a joy to ride and represent the beginning of the Ducati superbike story
