Description
For sale is my rare 1997 Land Rover Defender 90 with a factory fitted BMW 2. 8i straight 6-cylinder petrol (M52) engine – only 656 were built for the South African market during the BMW ownership of Land Rover. The 2. 8i power plant produced significantly more power than contemporary Defender petrol units (193bhp / 142kw), giving the short-wheelbase 90 a lively, responsive character while retaining its rugged off-road credentials.
Today, there are few remaining examples in this excellent condition. They’re considered collector-grade rarities, often referred to as the most charismatic petrol-powered Defenders ever produced. With limited production, market exclusivity, and a mechanical story rooted in one of Land Rover’s most interesting ownership eras this an increasingly desirable model in the Defender line-up.
The current mileage is 140, 000 miles or 224, 794 km (209, 838 km when the 2018 MOT was done for context on mileage). MOT next due in October 2026. The interior and lining is all original and in great condition and the vehicle also has factory air conditioning, another rare feature for a late 90's Defender. The vehicle comes with 2 sets of keys.
I’ve owned the vehicle since 2012 and imported her to the UK in late 2016. I have all the import paperwork to go with the vehicle. First year was spent in London and since early 2018 she has been tucked up in a garage in Hampshire as much as possible. I do low mileage as mostly used on the weekends for local activities in the summer months.
Since purchasing the vehicle, I have spared no expense in and out. I’ve have tried to keep her looking as original as possible where modifications / additions / repairs have been carried out. The original BMW engine runs very smoothly and the vehicle is maintained by a Land Rover Specialist. The main modifications that have been made since she rolled off the factory floor include:
Internal roll-bar
Secondary fuel tank controlled via a relay pump switch
Middle console has been upgraded to a solid lockable version
Bright yellow pedal locking pedal plate has been installed as a security measure
Upgraded front steering arm protection in the form of a discreet bash plate
Upgraded Halogen headlights all round (including a rear reverse / worklight)
A-frame bullbar to host the Wipac 100w spotlights
Reinstating of the four rear inward folding seats
Original Land Rover rear interior protection mat
Fitted a high lift jack below the rear door
Seven speaker sound system with handsfree and Bluetooth connectivity
Aircon had already been factory fitted at the cost of a little leg / knee room
Exhaust wrapping applied
Seat covers all round
High-lift jack fitted under back door
Tow bar (electrics serviced in 2021)
As featured in September 2022 edition of Land Rover Owner Magazine.
