Description

Capots Vintage, specialists in sport and collectible vehicles in Lyon, offer for sale a Jaguar MK2 from 1961:

We have the pleasure of presenting this superb Jaguar MK2 3. 4 L, delivered new to Paris on 6 February 1961 by the importer Charles Delecroix, as evidenced by its Jaguar Heritage Certificate. It today presents in a very elegant original Imperial Maroon shade, paired with Grey leather upholstery—a refined combination, perfectly matching colours, representative of the British charm of the era.

The car benefited from a complete restoration between 2010 and 2012:

The bodywork was fully restored, with a complete strip-down of the shell, while preserving its original colour. Its Imperial Maroon hue, this deep burgundy red with bright reflections, admirably highlights the sharp and balanced lines of the MK2. The presentation is particularly flattering, with a paint finishing to a high standard and excellent level of finish. The whole thing is free of any trace of corrosion. The front end, instantly recognisable, features its chromed oval grille framed by the four characteristic round headlamps, here completed with two additional fog lamps of striking effect. At the rear, the typical round lamps and the discreet MK2 monogram complete a silhouette that has become iconic. The 72‑spoke chrome-painted wheels, matched to the body colour and fitted with Michelin tyres in excellent condition, add a sporty yet elegant touch, perfectly in keeping with the model’s spirit.

The Mk2’s interior also evokes the absolute elegance of the 60s. The front leather seats in Grey have been completely reupholstered, while the rear bench remains in excellent original condition, contributing to the ensemble’s authentic charm. The doors benefit from courtesy lighting that activates when opened. The walnut burr veneers, ubiquitous in the cabin, are in superb condition and provide that luxurious, warm and timeless atmosphere associated with Jaguar’s finest of that era, even in the finely crafted rear shelves. This car also stands out for a setup reminiscent of some regularity rally participations, including the Tour Auto: it features front harness-type seat belts with aviation buckles, as well as a cut-off switch, a fire extinguisher and a neo-retro radio—discreet but very present equipment that immediately recalls its vocation to combine elegance and temperament.

On the mechanical side, this Jaguar retains its original engine block and cylinder head, making it a matching-numbers example. It has benefited from a high-level preparation and tuning, carried out in England by one of the most reputable Jaguar XK engine specialists. It is now equipped with a 4-speed XJ-type gearbox with overdrive, as well as a bespoke stainless exhaust system with dual outlets, which enhances the noble and sporty sound of the six-cylinder. The addition of electric power steering enhances ease of use, especially at low speeds. Braking has been revised and optimised with drilled discs, while a limited-slip differential and stabiliser bars complete the car’s road handling.

Under the bonnet, the six-cylinder, fed by SU HD8 carburettors, delights as much by its presentation as by its performance. The revs rise cleanly, vividly and sapidly, revealing that lively and expressive character expected of a Jaguar prepared with high standards. The mechanical work benefited from a full rebuild entrusted to Rob Beere, a benchmark name in the Jaguar XK engine world. Fully documented, this intervention was carried out with remarkable care and a particularly high level of finish, with several discreet yet effective evolutions: increased bore, enlarged valves, strengthened connecting rods, high-capacity oil pump, modern rear main seal crankshaft, electronic ignition 123… Tuned, break-in run, then dyno tested, this setup reflects a high-quality preparation aimed at offering more performance, reliability and availability, without ever compromising the balance or soul of the Jaguar’s mechanics.

The dossier accompanying this car matches the quality of its restoration, with nearly €90, 000 in invoices. We also hold a substantial photographic file detailing the work carried out.

It is also possible to provide with the car a set of original parts including notably: Moss gearbox, original carburettors, and a set of chrome wire wheels.
