Description
1984 Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk2 – Restored, Rare Leather, Proper Old-School GTI
There’s a reason the Mk2 GTI still gets talked about the way it does. It took what made the original special and just made it better more power, better brakes, more solid all round—but without losing that light and simple feel that makes these cars so addictive to drive. For a lot of people this is the one to have.
This is a genuine UK car (German supplied), finished in Atlas Grey with the rare black leather interior and factory power steering. It’s covered 166k miles, but the engine was replaced earlier in its life and has done roughly half of that, and it still feels exactly how it should eager and smooth.
It’s got a proper history behind it too. There’s a huge file going right back to the 80s, packed with old MoTs and invoices, and it’s been with the same owner for the last 12 years. At some stage it went through a full restoration including a reshell and engine, and more recently it’s had over £4, 500 spent bringing everything back up to scratch.
A lot of the important stuff has already been done—cooling system, belts, ignition, fuel system (now happy on modern fuel), brakes, suspension, subframe work, and the underside has been sorted and protected. It’s been done properly, not just made to look good.
And that’s kind of the theme with the whole car. It presents really well, but it’s not overdone. Clean enough to take to a show, but you wouldn’t think twice about just jumping in and using it. It’s got the right details too period grille, Hella lights, fresh trims and it sits nicely on the correct Pirelli “P-slot” alloys. There are a few age-related marks here and there, but nothing out of place for a car like this.
Inside is where it really stands out. The black leather is a rare option and still in great shape nicely worn, not worn out. and everything works as it should. There’s also a discreet Sony Bluetooth head unit fitted, which is a nice touch without ruining the feel.
Out on the road, it’s exactly what you want from a Mk2 GTI. Light responsive, and just fun. It starts, idles and drives properly.
These are only going one way now. Mk1 values have already taken off, and Mk2s—especially good, honest ones like this are starting to follow. It’s a proper bit of 80s/ 90s hot hatch history that you can still get in and enjoy.
