Description
This stunning 1970 Firebird scrambler forms part of my private BSA collection kept in a dehumidified facility, an east coast USA model with the unique one year only Catalina shape tank, it has matching authenticated numbers also the crankcase halves match.
Imported in 1990 it is on an age related plate , registered historic and currently SORN. Having been stored for many years in its original state with mileage in 1995 showing 3, 500 it was refreshed a couple of years ago with numerous new parts including complete exhaust , premier carbs, clutch, wheel bearings, cables, tyres and more with many parts powder coated.
Just had new battery , rectifier, service and a professionally remade seat , now showing only 6, 700 mls! Many MOT’s from 95 show the slow increase in mileage and judging from the condition of all the original components and the lack of wear I think it’s a good possibility that the mileage is genuine.
Many parts have been left original showing some patina, the wiring loom is in very good condition, the flamboyant blue paint is excellant and correct with a few small chips and a little paint lifting around the tank cap, no dents and no rust. side panels are original steel.
Wheels are original and polish up really well though with a little patina. personally I consider a little originality is better for actual usage rather than a full restoration more suitable for showing.
Running on points and because it starts easily, runs particularly well and strongly with no issues I saw no need to change what works perfectly well.
A point of interest is that one year only tank would never have had any badging, as confirmed by the classic magazine article included, I put the decals on as I preferred something on the tank.
A large bundle of receipts and mot’s , an original bsa parts book and manual are present.
So, to sum up this rare machine is in really excellent condition with lots of originality with new replacements where it mattered, A much admired bike everywhere it goes , and it does go wonderfully well!
Reason for selling is old age, two new knees and a recent hip,
Ps, the side stand is being painted and modified and will be refitted!…….
Now done and a better stance as a result.
