An evocative homage to the legendary Alfa Romeo 158 'Alfetta', this Tipo 184 is a recently completed build based on the reliable Mazda MX-5 (NB) powertrain. Designed by Ant Anstead and engineered by Dowsetts Classic Cars, this single-seater offers the raw, visceral experience of 1950s Grand Prix racing with modern mechanical reliability.
• Chassis: Bespoke tubular steel spaceframe (Dowsetts)
• Engine: 1. 8L Mazda BP-series (from Mazda MX-5 NB donor). Fully rebuilt by Kent MX5 (still requires c. 100 miles of running in followed by oil change)
• Gearbox: 5-speed manual with bespoke remote linkage
• Suspension: Mazda subframes with GAZ coil-over-shocks.
• Seatbelts: 6-point TRS race belts
• Wheels: Period-correct wire wheels with knock-off hubs
• Brakes: Sports discs and Yellowstuff pads. Dual brake fluid reservoir. Adjustable brake bias.
• Weight: Approximately 750kg
This car has been fully assembled, fully functional and runs well. It utilizes a Mazda MX-5 NB as the donor, ensuring that the engine, gearbox, and differential are robust and easy to maintain.
Build Highlights:
• Bodywork fibreglass gel coat in red
• Full Dowsetts exhaust system.
• Correct period-style cockpit including race seat, and wood-rimmed Moto-Lita steering wheel.
Condition & Testing: The car is mechanically complete and runs well. Built from the full kit supplied by Dowsetts (Kit cost £21, 240) plus an original donor MX5, plus various upgrades from original MX 5 spec (e. g. braking system). Original donor car ran very well (we drove the MX5 back from Lincolnshire to Surrey, was flawless - shame to dismantle it really!), but decided to have the engine rebuilt by Kent MX5 anyway, on the basis I'd intended to race the car (albeit I've never found the time!). The engine will require c. 100 miles of running in and an oil change.
The car comes with an additional exhaust heat shield (which is not shown in the pictures and is not attached, as I think it spoils the look).
Car is fully prepped and ready for track use, but would require modification and IVA for road use.
