Offered for sale, reluctantly, is my beloved 1999 MGF 75th Anniversary, recently returned from the paint shop. This is an exceptionally rare, low mileage example with 66k miles from new and of the limited production 75th Anniversary MGF, number 940 of just 2000 ever produced globally. It benefits from a number of tasteful and useful upgrades over the years while retaining its original character.
The 1. 8i twin cam engine pulls really strong, with the exhaust note in the upper half of the rev range genuinely sounding like music, confidently pushing the car to 62 mph in around 6-7 seconds thanks to its low 1060 kg kerb weight.
The stunning metallic Mulberry Red paintwork is combining a classic appearance with a suitably sporting flavour. It has been professionally refinished and given a deep wet flat polish, and the result is genuinely astonishing. This paintwork upgrade is valued at £4000. Also, later MGFs were no longer offered in this colour, making good examples increasingly difficult to find. There is no bubbling or rust anywhere on the car, and the sills and underneath are rust-free.
The uprated suspension valued at £800 comes with polyurethane bushes at key points, sharpening the handling without making the ride harsh. The car also retains its factory Hydragas suspension, a genuinely unique system that uses interconnected displacer units containing pressurised nitrogen gas and fluid instead of conventional steel springs, delivering an unusually smooth, supple ride while keeping the sharp, mid-engined handling the MGF is known for.
The exhaust has also been upgraded, valued at £1200, with a full stainless steel system by Piper / Mike Satur designed to eliminate cabin droning while offering a deep, sporty tone and power gains up to 18 BHP paired with the sports cat, pushing the overall output to around 135 BHP.
To bring the liveliness of the steering up a level, I've had an isolator switch professionally fitted, valued at £250, allowing the power assistance to be switched off when desired. On a good country road this gives a far more direct and engaging steering feel, while retaining the convenience of power assistance for town driving and parking if preferred.
I've also fitted a specialist Mike Satur aluminium Slick Shift gear selector assembly worth £500, providing a wonderfully precise gear change and vastly improving the driving experience. This paired with the new Toyo Proxes tyres, valued at £450, the car feels very planted and sporty on a fun country road.
Inside, the car has an exceptionally high quality Bluetooth audio system, comprising a top of the range Alpine CDE-193BT head unit, Focal Expert speakers, a JBL amplifier, and a dedicated Focal bass amplifier. The bass amplifier is mounted directly to the firewall behind the passenger seat, delivering clean, clear bass without taking up valuable cabin or luggage space. The system cost approximately £1500 and the sound quality genuinely needs to be heard to be fully appreciated.
The original red lush leather seats remain with the car and are worth over £2000 on their own if bought separately, and both the soft top and the hard top are in excellent condition.
A black hardtop is also available for an additional £295. It is in excellent condition and has recently been fitted with a new ivory white leather headlining, which cost me £400 to get fitted.
I purchased the car in 2021 and have owned it for five years. During that time it has received continuous care, maintenance, and upgrades, and has been stored in my garage under a car cover throughout. In terms of maintenance, the head gasket has been replaced with the uprated specification, the cambelt and water pump were replaced approximately 7000 miles ago.
The car comes with an extensive history file containing receipts, invoices, and paperwork to prove the maintenance, restoration, and upgrades carried out over the years. It has a fresh MOT with no advisories, valid until April 2027, along with an immobiliser and remote key fob. A full size spare tyre is tucked away in the front boot, along with the original tool set in its leather pouch, and the battery is a strong Yuasa unit.
In summary, the car has received upgrades worth well over £10k in my ownership, resulting in a remarkably complete and fun convertible two seater: light, agile, refined, and genuinely engaging, with excellent road holding and a more composed, polished driving experience than the car had from factory.
