2016 Land Rover Discovery 4 Graphite SDV6 – 167, 000 miles – Engine Repair Project .
This is a genuinely reluctant sale of my 2016 Discovery 4 Graphite. It's a beautiful late example in metallic blue with dark grey heated leather, original grey Land Rover alloys in very good condition and only two previous owners.
I am mechanically experienced and there was a time when I might have taken on a job like this myself. These days, however, I don't really want to embark on an engine rebuild or replacement, so I've reluctantly decided to offer the car to someone with the facilities, time and inclination to repair it.
I haven't stripped the engine or had the fault formally diagnosed, so I'm deliberately not claiming that it is a particular known Discovery engine failure. What I can say is that there is a significant bottom-end knock and the car is being sold on that basis as an engine repair project. I would expect it to be recovered rather than driven away.
That's particularly frustrating because the rest of the Discovery is so good.
It has covered 167, 000 miles but has a good Land Rover service history from new to 2021. I have a printout of the Land Rover online service record, lots of receipts and both keys.
Since I've had it, it has also had:
• New brake discs and pads all round
• New front wheel bearing
• Side steps fitted
• Excellent tyres all round
It has an MOT until December 2026.
The metallic blue bodywork presents very well, as does the dark grey heated leather interior, and the original grey Land Rover alloy wheels are in very good condition. It is a particularly handsome Discovery and certainly doesn't look or feel like a tired 167, 000-mile vehicle.
I'm not trying to disguise the seriousness of the engine problem – anyone considering buying it needs to allow for an engine repair or replacement. Equally, I would hate to see such a nice late Discovery simply treated as a breaker when, in the right hands, I think it is well worth putting back on the road.
If I still wanted to take on major mechanical projects myself, I would probably repair it and keep it. Instead, I'm hoping it will go to someone who knows these cars, can tackle the work economically and will get many more years of use from it.
I'm very happy to talk through the car, its history and the symptoms honestly with anyone seriously interested. The service-history printout and receipts are available to inspect. I bought the Discovery about six months ago because I particularly wanted a good Discovery 4 and have thoroughly enjoyed owning it. Unfortunately, the engine has now developed a nasty bottom-end knock.
