Description

The Ural is kept in an insulated garage and is in great all-round condition with some wear and tear consistent with its age, i. e. good but not perfect. It was the personal vehicle of David Angel the UK Ural importer and owner of F2 motorcycles. It is in good running order and has recent tyres and an oil change. It has been huge fun and a hit where ever we go. Performance wise it is rated at 40 BHP with its 750cc BMW derived boxer twin. A unique and useful feature for a motorbike is its reverse gear which is great when conquering the various passes and narrow roads here in the Lake District. It has a large lockable boot behind the passenger which comfortably stores helmets when you stop. It also has additional storage in the ammunition box which will hold 3 bottles of wine (an unofficial rating you understand!). It has an extra 10 litre gerry can and a search light on the side car. It has an electric starter and runs perfectly and starts first time. These vehicles have been made virtually unaltered since 1941, so the performance is actually surprising in that it will cruise all day at 50mph but will do 65 if you are feeling brave. It has conquered Hard Knott Pass, the steepest road in England from the tricky western approach with no problems. We are moving to France so sadly it has to remain in the UK.

Remarkably this enduring classic comes up as ULEZ compliant and we like it because motorbikes can park for free almost anywhere in the UK. So when the tourist season hits the Lake District it has proved perfect for days out to just nipping into town or going to a nice cafe. I also find that parking up a Ural always sparks up a conversation, the latest Ural adventure I was told about was 3 blokes who took theirs to the edge of the arctic. I did have a Morgan, but the Ural is far more fun and much better value. Riding it does take some adjustment, its straight forward, but a unique and extremely rewarding experience, a clean gear change and smooth entry and exit of corners leaves me feeling good at very legal speeds. It is tough WWII engineering which is built to last. It will also beat any Yamaha R1, Honda Fireblade or Ducati Panigale in a race... as long as it's in reverse.
