1966 Vanden Plas Princess Limousine – New Zealand Historic Provenance
Offered for sale is my 1966 Vanden Plas Princess Limousine, an imposing and increasingly rare British luxury motor car with a particularly interesting New Zealand history.
This Princess is understood to have been associated with Sir Bernard Fergusson, Governor-General of New Zealand from 1962 to 1967, giving the car a wonderful connection to an important period in New Zealand history.
The Vanden Plas Princess represented traditional British luxury at its finest. Hand-finished by Vanden Plas, these cars were built for dignitaries, government use, formal occasions and those wanting something considerably more distinguished than an ordinary luxury saloon.
The limousine has tremendous presence. Its upright proportions, imposing chrome grille and generous passenger compartment make it every bit the ceremonial motor car, while the beautifully traditional interior captures an era of craftsmanship that has largely disappeared.
Powered by the proven Austin 4-litre six-cylinder engine, the Princess was designed to provide dignified, effortless transport rather than outright performance. It remains an exceptionally charming way to travel and attracts attention wherever it goes.
The car would make a wonderful addition to a significant British or New Zealand historic vehicle collection and would also be ideally suited to weddings, special occasions or simply being enjoyed as the remarkable piece of motoring history that it is.
After enjoying my time as custodian, I have decided to offer the Princess to its next owner. These Vanden Plas limousines are now seldom encountered, particularly in New Zealand, and finding one with an interesting history such as this is increasingly difficult.
