A quick drive in this 2000 model year Mazda MX5 Mk2 reminds me once again just how good to drive a decent Mk2 can be. I'm selling this one via my business, Goodwood Sportscars and
I have been buying and selling Mazda MX5s for over 20 years now.
While I'm a car dealer, I consider myself to be a car enthusiast above all else. I'll only sell cars that actual interest me as an enthusiast. I live, sleep and breath quick cars and have sold literally thousands of performance cars over a thirty year period. I have competed in various forms of motorsport including the Scottish Hillclimb Championship (in an MX5 of course). So I'm pretty good at spotting a good car and at making one work to the best of its ability. I've had many thousands of MX5s through my hands and know their strengths and weaknesses well.
This one is a 1. 8 finished in Twilight Blue with grey/ black cloth seats and trim, electric windows and mirrors, central locking, twin air bags and a lovely Nardi leather rimmed steering wheel. Its covered 95729 miles from new and unusually for a 26 year old car, it has a full service history consisting of a service book full of stamps and a pile of invoices for services and work done. The last big one was carried out last year by Mazda Menders who replaced the cam belt, water pump, auxiliary belts, fuel filter, camshaft and crank seals and gave it a service.
I know this car well as I originally sold it a couple of years ago and its just been traded back in to me as a part exchange against another MX5.
Inside, everything is in nice clean condition with good carpets, dashboard and trim. The stereo is an older one and sounds good though the aerial which once upon a time was electrically operated, now just works manually. In a blast to the past the stereo plays cassettes (dig out your Barry Manilow tapes) though it also has a CD changer in the boot (dig out your Abba CDs too). Everything works as it should and everything is smart and tidy.
Bodywork is good too; its had some repairs to rear wheel arches and the sills were repaired properly by a well known MX5 specialist two or three years ago. Paintwork is good and while there is the odd stone chip and a very minor scuff on the side of the rear bumper (which is hard to see), its a very good looking, solid and smart car.
The underside is in good order and its just been treated with Dynax UB. Wings, doors, inner wheel arches etc are all tidy and solid. Its fitted with a black mohair soft top complete with glass window and it has its original wind blocker and tonneau cover. Its sitting on a set of 15" Mazda five-spoke alloys and these are fitted with a set of matching Michelin tyres.
The car drives beautifully well, very smooth and comfortable and very civilised for a sportscar. Suspension is firm without being hard and uncomfortable and the handling is excellent. The engine pulls strongly and clutch and gearbox are just as they should be while brake discs, pads and lines are all in good order. Its free from rattles and squeaks and is just lovely to drive. This could easily be used every day but its also special enough to keep for the weekends and holidays.
As mentioned, it had a big service last year and its just been done again with new spark plugs, filters and oil. There are two keys along with the original handbook and service book and its had its background HPI checked and is free from previous accident damage etc. Its MOT tested until August 2027. Its not perfect (its 26 years old remember) but its pretty good and drives substantially better than most MX5 Mk1s and is considerably cheaper too at a firm £3750.
