Description
This is my 1997 2. 5 986 Boxster in Arctic Silver with a Nephrite Green Interior. I can already hear people's reactions to green; trust me I was there too. However, it really suits the silver.
Whoever specc'd the car from new went all out; besides leather everywhere, it also has factory carbon trim around the centre console and sill plates.
I've owned the car since February 2023 with the intention of using it for one summer and 3. 5 years later, it's still here. I have put 17, 500 miles on the car during that period, using it for driving trips that have included Wales, the NC500, and various locations across Europe, including Norway. It has never let me down. It's my fun car, so it hasn't been used for trips to the supermarket etc, etc. Although it's now just over 107, 500 miles, those are all warmed-up engine miles.
I bought the car off an older gentleman who was downsizing his collection; he kept it immaculate. However, because he maintained all his cars himself, this means there is a gap in the service history. You can see this gap in the photo of the service book. That said, since I have owned the car it has been serviced annually, and anything needed has been completed. As mentioned, it's been as far as Switzerland and Norway so it has to be ultra-reliable. Among the replaced items in my ownership are: 4 new Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres, New coils & plugs all round, both front control arms. Replacement roof motor. Door lock module.
Exterior
You will notice the slightly updated look which was completed prior to my ownership. Great condition lights with no clouding, this also included the newer roof with heated glass rear window. I installed the handbrake bypass, allowing you to lower the roof whilst moving. Paint wise there are some paint chips (as expected on a nearly 30-year-old car) and a couple of marks which I can provide close-ups of. This is a driver's car, not a garage queen.
Interior
The 97 986 didn't come with a rear cubby shelf. I installed a matching one and fitted it with speakers, and I also upgraded the dash speakers when I fitted a double din pioneer head unit, so it now has car play.
Mechanically
The car drives great. It has factory fitted MO30 sports suspension perfect for those EU adventures. Being the 2. 5, it is throttle cable acceleration and loves getting over 4000rpm where it comes alive. Although this engine doesn't suffer with the same IMS issues, it was replaced in its history as a precaution. It doesn't use a drop of oil between services.
In case it's applicable, it is already registered as ULEZ compliant
Bad Points
The starter motor can make a whirring noise, particularly when it's cold. I have been told it's vibration in the nose cone and nothing to worry about.
Paint as I mentioned has some age related marks.
The windscreen has a couple of stone chips. I haven't replaced it mainly because of the DAB aerial.
Aircon doesn't blow cold. I had it leak checked when I first got it and all it needed was a regas, so it might be the same again.
Service history gap.
Overall this is a fantastic little car, I would happily drive to Europe in it tomorrow without any prep. I am going to miss it and contemplated keeping it, so I am not in a rush to sell. Private plate comes with the car.
